THE ROLE

Responsible for the design of Blast Furnace Plant and Mechanical equipment and the development of new and existing Blast Furnace equipment, the Mechanical Design Engineer will carry out concept design, design reviews and detail engineering of specific items of Blast Furnace equipment.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will also be responsible for the Engineering of a specific portion of a project. Project responsibilities; productivity, technical output, resource control, progress, product standardisation, health and safety and compliance.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the main tasks and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Produce, monitor and/or check that technically compliant and cost-effective design documentation; drawings, specifications, schedules, calculations, manuals etc. meet project requirements and company operating procedures / statutory obligations. Work with the lead engineer as the technical focus for a specific portion of a project ensuring a successful and commercially viable contract execution. This would include monitoring and reporting budgets, progress and change management. Comply with the company operating procedures and statutory obligations. Participate in project Design & Safety Reviews, Risk Assessments etc. Work with other engineers to develop specific products through concept design (mechanical), calculations, design reviews, detail engineering and onto a saleable product. The Mechanical Design Engineer should be able to complete mechanical design and basic calculation work on their own, working with senior engineers to carry out advanced calculations and analysis. When required ensure that equipment is manufactured, tested, installed and commissioned in accordance with the design / operational requirements.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Equipment design skills, able to work alone or in groups to produce innovative, robust designs, built with both manufacture and operation in mind and suited to the harsh environment they will operate in. Design calculation ability, usually with ‘MathCAD’ or Microsoft Excel required. Basic 3D CAD skills (Preferably Autodesk Inventor), training available depending on experience. Working knowledge of environmental, health & safety and technical regulations. Experience in heavy industry, preferably in Mechanical Design Engineering role. Ideally educated to degree level in mechanical engineering discipline, HNC / HND or other qualifications may be considered depending on experience

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Must have current UK Driving License, as well as the right to live and work in the UK and travel internationally without restrictions, possibly at short notice.
