We provide patient transport services within Derbyshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire and currently have vacancies at our two NEPTS stations in Northamptonshire.

Main duties of the job

Ideally you will have NHS and/or patient care experience within a Health and Social Care role. This may extend to voluntary roles, including community response or voluntary ambulance services. Alternatively, you may have been in a customer-facing role, with experience of dealing with complex or challenging situations and achieving good outcomes with people and colleagues.

About us

EMAS pays a Real Living Wage, therefore your starting salary would be £23,464

Our NEPTS Care Assistants work up to hours per week across a range of shifts including days, nights, weekends and public holidays. Some of the shift patterns will require you to work a 24-hour rotating pattern. We do also offer flexible working and have several staff working hours and shift patterns that helps to manage their work life balance whilst helping us to provide the best possible care for our patients.

The NEPTS Care Assistant role will require you to use technology such as a PDA and an IPAD. During your education period, you will produce workbooks, undertake written and practical assessments and engage in face-to-face and online learning. You will complete a care certificate and once you have completed your 9 month probation period you will have the opportunity to look to progress within patient transport or other areas within EMAS, or may be you will just want to stay as you are which is what so many of our current NEPTS Care Assistants do.

Job responsibilities

To undertake journeys, transporting patients, health care professionals and escorts to and from specified locations as specified by the Trust to enable contractual requirements to be met.

To ensure the safety and well-being of patients at all times whilst in your care both on and off the vehicle and, when driving ambulance vehicles, to ensure that due consideration is given to other road users.

To ensure that patients are collected and returned home without any undue delay (and within contractual quality requirements) both within a period of duty and, as necessary, when working over-time after a period of duty.

Ensure that patients are always escorted and assisted at all times whilst in your care.

Complete dynamic risk assessments for moving patients safely and advise Control of any perceived problems, for example using carry chairs in confined spaces, on stairs, outside steps and uneven road surfaces.

Administer Oxygen as documented on the original booking, as required to the patient.

To ensure that all patients are secured into the Ambulance vehicle, seat belts fastened, wheelchairs correctly clamped.

To maintain the highest standards of conduct, customer care, and courtesy in dealing with patients whilst always maintaining their dignity and privacy.

To maintain the highest standards of customer care and conduct in dealing with members of the public and other Health Service staff, and, as a representative of the Trust, to seek to promote a high-quality professional service at all times.

Provide reassurance to patients whilst making their journey as comfortable and safe as possible and to be observant and knowledgeable to the fact that patients health can alter/deteriorate at any given time.

To comply at all times with Trust procedures and relevant legislation to ensure an effective service delivery and ensuring the health, safety and welfare of patients and colleagues.

To observe situations in relation to patient well-being and safeguarding including their home environment and notify any potential problems to Control and the appropriate officer or responsible medical career.

To ensure the timely, accurate and legible completion of operational documentation.

To maintain close liaison with Control, advising of any changes to normal routine and procedure including re-planning journeys due to road conditions, adverse weather or patients not ready. Cancellation of bookings or changes in mobility status.

Ensure vehicle and equipment is wiped down between patients and adhere to all Trust Infection Prevention Control Procedures.

To maintain vehicles, equipment, and premises to defined standards at all times. This will include ensuring that ambulance vehicles and equipment are in operational readiness (for example, re-fuelled), daily vehicle checks and that any defects are reported. It may also include assistance with house-keeping duties as and when required. Ensure the vehicle has the correct, working communication equipment (PDA), reporting any identified defects to line management and Control.

To report any hazardous or dangerous equipment, premises, or practices to the appropriate line manager.

Report all near miss/incidents immediately through the Trust Incident Reporting Procedure.

To undertake training (which may be residential) as required to facilitate the provision of a high-quality service and then ensuring knowledge of equipment use and procedures is maintained.

To adopt a flexible approach in response to operational needs regarding duties, base / location and hours of work.

To undertake any other appropriate duties as required.
