Job summary

The Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (ACCPs) is a clinical professional who has developed their skills and theoretical knowledge of the critically ill patient to a very high standard. They are highly experienced, and educated members of the critical care team who are able to assess, diagnose and treat your health care needs or refer you to an appropriate specialist if needed. They are empowered to make high-level clinical decisions and be autonomous practitioners on critical care. They will work closely with the medical and nursing teams and provide expert advice on the critical care unit.

The appointee will be part of the team providing daily care to patients on the Critical Care Unit and reviewing critically ill patients on the wards and in ED. There are daily formal handover sessions. The unit is staffed during the day with three Consultant Intensivists and currently at least 6 trainees/JCF/ACCPs. As an ACCP you will form part of the non-consultant medical team.

Out of hours is part of ITU working with resident senior trainee and/or Consultant supervision. There are 2 Consultants during the day and at weekends. Appropriate compensatory rest periods are built into the rota in line with agenda for change conditions. Once qualified, the ACCP appointee will be expected to cover shifts over 24/7 periods regularly.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides acute, community and specialist services to the population of East Lancashire and Lancashire/South Cumbria.

Services are provided from two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. Acute services are housed on the Blackburn site and include the emergency department, the 32 bedded Critical Care Unit and the acute surgical and medical units. The ED is a trauma unit in the Lancashire Trauma network with Preston as the Trauma Centre

The Trust has close links with several Tertiary Centres in Lancashire, Manchester and Liverpool.

The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital provides acute services in 503 + 70 day case beds

The hospital is situated just off junction 5 of the M65 and is our main hospital site receiving all emergency patients dealing with all emergency inpatient care. All blue light ambulances attend this site.

Training and qualifications

Essential

GCSE Maths and English level 4 or equivalent or a functional skills course. First level registered Nurse/Allied Health Professional Previous study at Degree level Recognised advanced specialist qualification in critical care

Desirable

Advanced Clinical Skills Non-Medical prescribing module NMC Approved mentor preparation course/ or equivalent. Teaching Qualification Management qualification Experience in clinical supervision ALS Provider/ Instructor Transfer Training Previous study at MSc level
