Power Electronic Design Engineer for EV Charging Systems

The Role
Flexible Power Systems (FPS) and Newcastle University are offering an exciting opportunity to apply cutting edge power electronics and control expertise to enable the further scale-up of electrification across the larger vehicles in commercial fleets, and their associated hardware and ancillary systems.
The Associate will help Flexible Power Systems (FPS) achieving their ambition of becoming a world leader in enabling sustainable transport, through two distinctive phases:
Phase one:
The Associate will need to develop high-power and highly efficient electric Power Take Off (ePTO) technology to place FPS in a leading position in the ever expanding market.
Phase two:
The Associate will help FPS to develop high-power on-board bidirectional wireless charger, using the state-of-the art semiconductor technologies.
Candidates should have a PhD in power electronics and control or a related field.
The KTP Associate will be an employee of Newcastle University but will spend most of their working time at Flexible Power System premises at and when required at Newcastle University. Although the contract is fixed term for a duration of 36 months, more than 70% of KTP staff gain a permanent job offer by their KTP company.

Key Tasks
• Deliver key innovations in power electronic converter design and control
• Contribute novel design for on-board wireless bidirectional charging system
• Work with FPS engineering team to produce a demonstration system
• Ensure the effective transfer of knowledge through workshops, reports, training materials and mentoring
The Person
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
• Significant experience in modelling, design and simulation of power electronic converters and control
• Experience in control methodologies of power electronics, accounting for aspects voltage regulation, fast dynamic response, etc
• Experience of using power electronics simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS
• Experience in designing magnetic circuits, such as coupled inductors, transformers, etc
• Knowledge of wide band-gap power electronic circuits, hardware layout and PCB design
• Experience in the analysis of data and business case development
• Ability to work in laboratory environments, designing, constructing and testing power electronic converters and control platforms
• The candidate should be able to communicate effectively in English
