Wales, United Kingdom Citizens Advice Full time

Location: Blended between office and home (England and Wales). Time in office negotiable

Citizens Advice offers confidential advice online, over the phone, and in person, for free. Through our national network of charities, we give people the knowledge and the confidence they need to find their way forward whoever they are, and whatever their problem.

Citizens Advice is a charity working for the whole of society - whoever you are, whatever your problem. We provide practical advice people can really trust, when they really need it, supported by volunteers who are at the heart of the communities they serve.

We campaign on the issues that affect every single one of us, helping to build a fairer society for everyone. Our frontline work gives us unique insight - we see the human impact of broken policies and practices, and importantly what needs to be done to fix them.

We use this to inform our work in a number of ways:

  • We use the insights and data we get from our frontline advice to inform our policy work and to flag issues with decision makers
  • We come together as one campaigning network with our Research and Campaigns colleagues in local Citizens Advice offices
  • Our advocacy teams (and stakeholders) can train to spend up to a day a week giving advice with a local Citizens Advice. This enables our advocacy work to be grounded in an understanding of how our local Citizens Advice colleagues support clients every day

Who we’re looking for
We are looking for a Public Affairs Officer to join our Public Affairs team, supporting and working with colleagues to execute an organisational-wide public affairs strategy. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the big issues facing people across England and Wales today, joining a directorate with a track record of achieving change.

You’ll work across a range of policy areas, contributing to the development and execution of influencing strategies that engage decision makers on key issues, and the solutions that could make a difference. Our strong brand gives us unique opportunities to engage with those with the power to make national decisions, and you’ll help us deliver an organisational wide strategy to initiate and extend our opportunities to influence parliamentarians, government, regulators and industry bodies, on behalf of the people who rely on us.

This is a particularly exciting time to join us, as we focus our collective efforts on influencing the new government. In this role, you’ll have responsibility for guiding at least one of our policy teams in their influencing, supporting the development of a political engagement strategy as well as building relationships with parliamentarians and other key stakeholders. You’ll work closely with external affairs colleagues to craft compelling communications and collaborate with our network of local charities.

We’re looking for a collaborative person with a passion for helping people and a keen interest in the political and/or social justice landscape. You’ll have a strong interest in keeping abreast of the current political climate and breaking developments, have excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive working relationships. You will have an understanding of the UK legislative process and experience of building influencing capacity in a similar network organisation.

Do you want to work for an organisation that makes a difference, every single day, to people from all walks of life? The people that turn to Citizens Advice need help overcoming an obstacle in their lives from debt to evictions to trouble at work and you can be key to them getting the support they need in the quickest, easiest, and most effective way.

If you are interested in applying please demonstrate the following criteria in your cv and covering letter:

  • A commitment to the goals of Citizens Advice, and a passion for promoting social justice.
  • A proven track record working on public affairs projects - either in-house, in Parliament or for an agency - which have delivered significant and
  • demonstrable policy change.
  • Proven ability supporting project teams and working on several projects simultaneously, as well as responding to ad-hoc requests and delivering to deadlines.
  • Experience using best practice public affairs systems to monitor and communicate political opportunities and risks, and map and coordinate stakeholder management effectively and strategically.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is of strategic importance within the organisation and recognised as integral to all we do as a service.

Central to pursuing our EDI mission is building diverse and inclusive teams in which everyone has a sense of belonging. We believe inclusion is a social justice issue - a principle that underpins our all EDI work. To that end, we particularly welcome applications from people we would like to see better represented in our organisation and sector - people of colour, LGBTQ+ people and disabled people. We follow the social model of disability. We will offer an interview to disabled candidates who indicate they wish their application to be considered under our Disability Confident Interview Commitment where they meet our selection criteria in their application. Some of our roles attract a high volume of applications and in some circumstances where it is not practicable or appropriate, we may limit the number of interviews offered to disabled and non-disabled candidates. We will provide reasonable adjustments as needed.

We’re a flexible employer, so this role may suit anyone who’d prefer a flexible arrangement to help their work/life balance, many of our colleagues spend most of their time working remotely. Whilst we prefer a blended approach between a local office, if one is near you, and home we’re open to being flexible on location, occasionally a role may require you to be based in a certain location if that's the case it will be detailed in the advert or job description. This can be discussed in more detail during your interview.

The National Citizens Advice operates from offices in England and Wales, with 4 regional offices based in Cardiff, London, Birmingham and Leeds, therefore all successful applicants must be based within England or Wales.

Our commitment to colleague wellbeing is reflected in us being awarded Gold in the Health & Wellbeing category, as well as Overall Winners, at the Employee Experience Awards 2022.

Please be aware that Citizens Advice is not a sponsoring organisation. Therefore the successful applicant must already possess the right to work in the UK or be able to secure the right to work in the UK independently.

Citizens Advice seeks to redeploy internal staff who are at risk or under notice of redundancy and will prioritise them in the recruitment process where necessary. If you have been confirmed as at risk or under notice of redundancy please ensure you indicate this in the at-risk box in your application.

In the event of a high number of applications, we reserve the right to close the application early.

This vacancy closes at 23.59 on the closing date.
