We are keen to recruit an experienced Paediatric Nurse who is looking to develop their professional leadership and clinical skills within Paediatric High Dependency care.

UHB have a large, Paediatric service ran by a friendly, dynamic, talented team of professionals; we deliver high quality, compassionate care to the local community and beyond. We strive to provide a positive patient experience in a safe environment and we actively promote a family centred approach in the delivery of care.

We have a 4 bedded Level 2 HDU at Heartlands Hospital and a HDU stabilisation bed at Good Hope hospital. Our team work across both sites to provide HDU care to acutely unwell and chronically ill children and work closely with an established multi-disciplinary team. We operate a 24 hour, 7 day a week shift pattern but are willing to discuss flexible working if this is important for your work, life balance.

Main duties of the job

You will join a highly skilled, established team to care for critically ill children at UHB. Children may present with unexpected serious illness, have had a deterioration of chronic illness, been admitted for complicated surgery or are stepping down from ITU, you will be responsible for providing safe and effective nursing care to these children and support your colleagues.

You will be responsible for coordinating shifts, allocating duties to junior staff members and ensuring patient safety is prioritised by communicating effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team. You will deputise for the senior sister, ensuring that clinical standards are maintained and that trust policies and procedures are adhered to. You will need to be confident to make decisions, solve problems and escalate concerns appropriately.

As a band 6 you must be able to communicate effectively, utilise your organisational skills to assess patient requirements, prioritise workload, allocate skill mix and support all members of the nursing team. Children in other areas of paediatrics may have urgent critical care needs that require prompt action, you should be confident to respond to these situations and support the team when necessary.

You must be enthusiastic about learning so that you can gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to fulfill the requirements of this role. Be a consistent, professional role model and lead the team when dealing with critical situations.

Essential

*Child Branch Nurse on NMC register *Critical care qualification: Paediatric Critical Care Course, Paediatric High Dependency course or equivalent. *Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC *Mentorship/ Kudos training or equivalent

*Healthcare leadership/ management course

Experience

*Substantial post registration experience working in a Paediatric complex/ acute NHS health care setting *Experience with supervising / mentoring junior staff *Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD *Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment *Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration *Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff *Experience of mentoring undergraduate students *Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department *Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice. *Demonstrable ability, experience, passion in the following: oLeadership oTeam Building oManaging resources oTime management oRole modelling oChange management / clinical developments oClinical governance oAudit and research oWorkforce planning / management oNHS policy and political awareness
