Job summary

An exciting development opportunity has arisen for an experienced haematology nurse to join our team at the Centre for Clinical Haematology (CCH) as a Sister/Charge Nurse. The unit is located at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

CCH offers treatment and support to adults, teenagers and young adults with a wide range of haematology conditions. We administer Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) and supporting therapies. We also oversee an ambulatory Stem Cell Transplantation and chemotherapy programme. Alongside the management of a busy outpatient clinic and phlebotomy service.

The successful candidate will need experience in caring for haematology patients and be competent and have experience in cannulation and phlebotomy, the management of central lines and administration of SACT.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include are to manage and provide care for patients undergoing systemic anti-cancer therapies and supportive treatments.

Support the senior sister/ charge nurse in the day to day running of the unit. The post holder will be someone who displays excellent communication skills and will be responsible for assessing patients for chemotherapy to ensure their physical condition and blood parameters are acceptable in order to receive prescribed treatment.

Act as a role model and mentor, promoting excellence through practice and taking responsibility for supervision and development for all staff including student nurses, support workers, providing support, advice and training. Work closely and communicate effectively with all members of the MDT. You will deputise for the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse and will support the leadership and management of the department with particular emphasis on quality and clinical standards.

Administration and disposal of intravenous chemotherapy in line with Trust and National guidance. Undertake procedures related to Stem Cell Transplantation. Cannulation, phlebotomy or central line skills are essential

* Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register

Experience

* Completed the SACT passport and competent in administration of SACT * Previous/current experience caring for haematology patients. * Cannulation, venepuncture and CVAD competent. * Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising /mentoring junior staff * Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD * Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor /assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment * Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development,evidence of ability to maintain professional registration * Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff * Experience of mentoring undergraduate students * Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department * Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice. * Demonstrable ability, experience, passion in the following: o Leadership o Team Building o Managing resources o Time management o Role modelling o Change management / clinical developments o Clinical governance o Audit and research o Workforce planning / management o NHS policy and political awareness
