A Speech and Language Therapy Assistant Practitioner role is excellent experience when considering a career in Speech and Language Therapy.

An assistant role can foster supportive relationships for patients, carers and be an active and important member of our multi-disciplinary team for people living with lifelong disabilities. We visit patients in their own homes, care facilities, day services and colleges in the area of Walsall.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder assists in the management of the communication/swallowing needs of clients including those with challenging behaviours and complex needs, identified and monitored by a suitably experienced speech and language therapist, to maximise appropriate health, education and social benefits. It will include assisting in the management of clients for whom English is not the first spoken language along with an appropriate interpreter. The post-holder provides both direct and indirect intervention, advice and support as identified and diagnosed by a qualified therapist. The post-holder works alone with clients/families/other agencies as required following appropriate guidance and preparation from a qualified speech and language therapist. The post-holder liaises orally with significant others involved in the management of the client, within and outside the NHS, to ensure the client’s needs are met effectively and efficiently.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Under the guidance of qualified staff the post-holder is responsible for organising his/her own clinical administration, including making appointments, in order to meet access criteria and ensure a cost-effective quality service. The post-holder has responsibility for maintaining accurate and contemporaneous client records (within 24 hours), counter-signed by a qualified member of staff, this is in order to ensure compliance with departmental, professional and legal requirements. The post-holder carries out administrative activity associated with client care, to support the locality Speech and Language Therapy team, including making and cancelling appointments, making and receiving telephone calls, dealing with mail, filing and photocopying, in order to ensure an efficient and cost-effective support service. The post-holder undertakes the development and provision of materials and low-tech communication aids to support clinical assessment and intervention in conjunction with the qualified therapist and as required by the speech and language therapy team.

Essential criteria

NVQ level 3 in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Intervention or equivalent qualification (e.g. relevant BTEC, access course) GSCE or equivalent English (A-C or 4-9 grade) Evidence of a relevant and up-to-date training and development record A minimum of three years’ experience working with children or adults with learning disabilities/mental health/forensic needs in a variety of settings.
