Job summary

The post-holder will work in Darent Valley Hospital, Theatres and has responsibility for the assessment and development of programmes of care, including monitoring standards of care. In addition, the post holder carries responsibility for deployment, supervision and teaching of multidisciplinary clinical staff and learners.

As a member of the multidisciplinary team they will participate in the delivery of perioperative patient care, providing expert, holistic care of a high standard to both patients and their relatives whilst they are under the care of Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.

The post holder will act as a clinical resource within the Unit and across the Division as necessary and will assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of practitioners within the Unit complement.

The successful applicant may be required to work cross-site at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup on occasions.

This position will not be supported for visa sponsorship. All applicants are expected to have valid right to work document to work in the UK when applying for this position.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an expert Practitioner in Operating theatre practice working clinically with all grades of staff in Theatre/Recovery. Having the ability to assess care needs, develop Programmes of Care and set up Standards of Care for all patients in theatres, which are evidence based.

The post holder carries responsibility for the education, learning, training and development of all staff and students placed in theatre.

A key element of the post will be the development and evaluation of a range of education programmes, strategies and resources to meet the needs of all staff to ensure that the theatres has a workforce who are fit for the purpose.

The post holder will work autonomously and as a positive role model in theatres providing support and leadership to all healthcare professionals within the theatre team.

The post holder will contribute significantly to the development of staff devising and revising Educational Policies and Guidelines.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

To be an expert Practitioner in Operating Theatre Practice and Care who is responsible for the assessment of nurses/operating department practitioner staff in caring for the perioperative patient as well as producing specialist perioperative advice both within theatres and to other clinical areas ie maternity.

To promote the delivery of perioperative care that is based on the latest research and is deemed to constitute best practice.

There is an occasional requirement for prolonged concentration in the clinical role, managing highly complex patients and in the Practice Development Practitioner role, meeting educational demands and targets.

When working clinically, the post holder will:

Assist other staff members in the safe moving and handling of perioperative patients. Physical movement of patients is usedto transfer and change patients position to and from the operating table.

To ensure that all necessary documentation is completed in accordance with agreed standards.

To safely administer medications as required for the role and within trust policy guidelines.

The clinical environment necessitates exposure to bodily fluids, vomit, sputum and highly unpleasant working conditions ( linen) the nature of theatres means clinical staff may be exposed to aggressive and abusive behaviour from both patients and relatives.

Ensure that all staffs are aware of their responsibility in the prevention and control of infection. To report known or potential cases to the Senior Nurse for Infection Control.

Essential

1st Level Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner Substantial theatre experience with evidence of supporting education in theatre 988 or equivalent teaching assessing course PGCE or Diploma Higher Education or willingness to study towards. ENB 176 or equivalent Degree

Management Qualification Masters

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

Expert Practitioner in perioperative care Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to include written, verbal and presentation skills. Ability to work autonomously Skills.
