About the role
Reporting to the Automation Systems Lead, and working closely with software engineers and a system specification lead within the development team, the Systems Engineer will provide support to the design, implementation, and management of complex engineering systems within Royal Mail. You will review and manage change requests raised by the business on existing system that are provided by automation suppliers, work within Royal Mail Engineering and closely with other business functions such as Group Technology, International, Operations, and Revenue Protection, and be involved with multiple projects, including the responsibility to interface with automation suppliers, support teams, and operational stakeholders to analyse and improve automation performed, and identify and correct operational defects. You will also provide engineering knowledge applicable to parcels and letter automation, using existing or incorporating new technologies, delivering knowledge to support, diagnose, improve, and maintain.
Key accountabilities and dimensions include:
Undertaking detailed investigations of ongoing issues using a range of tools and techniques such as data analysis, stakeholder discussions, and onsite inspection Collaborating with the senior engineers on system and software updates on parcel and letter automation systems Contributing to the development and update of systems requirements for parcel and letter automation Supporting system integration testing of a first article, both in a manufacturing facility and at the first article installation Supporting integration testing of subsequent articles during the deployment phase and business as usual activities Contributing to the development of supporting applications for integrating parcel automation systems Providing analysis and technical support of parcels automation performance, diagnosis, and troubleshooting Contributing to defect and design change management processes for deployed parcels automation and delivers timely resolution to issues working closely with the contracted supplier and all other strands of the engineering team Contributing to the support and development of parcel and letter automation systems Contributing to the successful delivery of parcels automation deployment activities of value up to £10m, which are critical to the Royal Mail parcels operation Delivering on-site support, detailed analysis, and incident management with suppliers to deliver parcel automation solutions Developing external and internal relationships through cross functional matrix teams including automation suppliers, engineering design, central engineering maintenance, and group procurement. Ability to engage and communicate effectively with internal and external key stakeholders, which include Original Equipment Manufacturers & Suppliers, RM Project Management Teams, Operational Design, and engineering team strands.About You

Familiarity and interest in developing, deploying, and testing software packages and updates. Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to effectively communicate and translate technical engineering knowledge to a wide range of audiences. Experience of performing data and root case analysis using a variety of data sources and tools, such as Excel, CSV, and databases. Experience of automated processes, equipment, and machinery. Experience of automation data interface specifications. Experience of automation systems testing. Experience of working closely with technology professionals in the integration of engineering solutions into the corporate enterprise reporting system. Experience of working with collaboration tool such as Confluence, JIRA, SharePoint, and Version Control systems. Good knowledge of developing and interpreting systems requirements. Ability to manage multiple priorities across a variety of work streams. A self-motivated individual able to work on their own initiative. Proven experience in maintaining latest technology trend knowledge in system and software engineering.Desirably:
Experience with scripting or programming languages such as Python or Bash. Experience of parcels automation and parcel address reading technologies. Track record of contributing to parcels and letter automation systems design, development, and roadmap. Recognised Qualification in an Engineering, Technical or Scientific Discipline at Level 6, such as BSc (Hons), LV6 NVQ, etc. Qualification in Health & Safety Management, such as IOSH. Recognised Accreditation from an Institution or Professional Counselling Body, at Incorporated or Chartered Level.We don’t expect every candidate to meet the full criteria for the role.
