Job summary

Do you have a passion for working within the Medicine specialities to use all your specialist skills? Come and be a part of our friendly and progressive Band 6 Medicine Rotation. Specialist areas include Healthcare of Older People, Medicine-Oncology, and Medicine-Surgery teams across both sites.

You will hold a complex caseload and offer assessment, treatment and creative rehabilitation of patients with complex physical and cognitive needs. You will be involved in delivering an OT service to help patients manage their own conditions through education, symptom management and intervention, enabling them to be discharged from hospital.

Rotations offer Band 6 staff exciting opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and experience across wide-ranging specialties including but not exclusive to palliative and long term conditions, neurological and cognitive deficits, surgical and orthopaedic interventions and amputees. Medicine is the perfect speciality to develop and maintain all of your skills.

You will have excellent communication skills, and a wide range of clinical skills and experience. You will have opportunity to participate in service development to progress patient care.

Main duties of the job

Please refer to job description and person specification for full details. Within your role, duties will include but may not be limited to:

Working as part of multidisciplinary teams on a variety of wards. Assessing and treating patients as appropriate in the relevant areas. ( dementia, Parkinson's, amputees, palliative care) Providing planned and unplanned care. Managing complex discharges including assisting patients to manage their own long term conditions and provide rehabilitation. Providing supervision to more junior staff (including Band 5, support and student members of staff) including appraisals, training and placements. Deputising for Band 7 team leader as appropriate. Working flexibly - including working rostered weekends/bank holidays. Working alongside Band 7's and other seniors in the team to develop service in line with evidence based practice and lead on projects. Supporting development of the rotation through evaluation, joint working and peer support. Enhancing your own CPD and career development

The Occupational Therapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 800 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists and prosthetists, physiotherapists, and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Job responsibilities

We are keen to work with you to develop your skills, and welcome interest from current Band 5 OTs. We will ensure you are well supported as you step into a Band 6 role, with supervision, practice development and peer support.

The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent core OT skills and a willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally. You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously and provide support to less experienced members of the team, including students and support workers. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service.

Training & Qualifications

Essential

oDiploma or degree in Occupational Therapy oHCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist oAble to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities

Experience

Essential

o Experience of working within an acute inpatient setting o Experience of using evidenced based practice to inform own practice and that of others

Communication and relationship skills

oAble to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills oAble to communicate patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors. oAble to effectively use a range of written and verbal communication skills with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating eg. Patients may be dysphasic, deaf, who may be unable to accept diagnosis or have terminal illness

Analytical and judgement skills

oAble to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of junior OT staff and support staff oRisk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of complex wheelchair patients oIndependently work through the OT process with patients requiring a permanent wheelchair

o Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes safe wheelchair positioning, maximising patient ability
