Project Manager, Young People & Partnerships
The Project Manager, Young People and Partnerships role works to create and deliver a programme of high-quality projects for young people and the wider community that foster a lifelong love of theatre and support pathways.
This role will work with the Head of Artistic Planning, Projects in the re-launch of the youth theatre offer at TRP, ensuring that young people’s voices contribute to the shape of the programme. This role will then lead the delivery of this work with young people. The role will also have responsibility for developing and supporting projects with some of our key strategic partners including other theatre companies and local and national organisations.
Working with a range of partners, freelancers, and staff from TRP, the Project Manager will manage a number of creative projects in formal and informal settlings, responding to need and opportunities as they arise. The Project Manager will ensure that projects are delivered on time and to budget and that our commitments to funding providers are met.
The Project Manager, Young People and Partnerships will have the option of maintaining their practice in workshops by directly delivering some projects. They will take a lead role in supporting other practitioners with their development training opportunities, mentorship and enabling and supporting reflective practice. The Project Manager will have line management responsibility for practitioners on our payroll. The Project Manager will have the opportunity to attend regular training to keep their practice fresh.
The Project Manager may line manage other support staff such as assistants or apprentices, ensuring that they are supported on their learning journey and are able to provide excellent administrative and practical support to the department, as required.
The Project Manager role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all company policies, particularly Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk.
An Enhanced DBS check is essential for this post.
The Role:
- Maintain and embed inclusive practice, championing accessibility throughout the young people’s programme.
- To lead on the operational management of a number of projects including creating partnership agreements, resource management including space and staffing, ensuring the safety of participants including checking consent forms are collected etc.
- To lead on the Practitioner Training Scheme in close collaboration with the Head of Artistic Planning, Projects, Associate Directors and other Project Managers ensuring that participants receive a high-quality experience.
- To provide effective and proactive line management for staff, as required.
- Maintain and develop artistic and facilitation practice through active delivery of workshops and performance opportunities and attending regular training and professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues in all departments, as appropriate, across the organisation to ensure timely delivery of quality outcomes to projects and activity.
- Help to ensure that the Children, Young People and Families and Community work is firmly embedded within Theatre Royal Plymouth and is communicated effectively across the Theatre and externally through collaboration with the Media and Communications and Marketing departments, and through partnership and advocacy work.
- Develop a strong partnership approach working with theatre companies, education institutions, charities and other stakeholders, through creating a shared understanding of the aims of projects and maintaining good communication.
- Develop compelling and high-quality engagement programmes around our in house producing in collaboration with colleagues
- Undertake and support the evaluation of projects you work on.
- Identify and support opportunities for the participants you work with to develop skills and support pathways
- Work with the Head of Artistic Planning, Projects to manage all relevant budgets ensuring work is completed within agreed spending parameters.

- Maintain up to date knowledge of the sector, the city, local and national government policy ensuring all projects are timely and relevant
Knowledge, skills and experience:
- Substantial experience of developing and delivering youth theatre offers.
- Experience of successfully managing freelance staff and knowledge of how to effectively support and nurture artists working professionally in the field of arts and education.
- Demonstrable experience of working effectively with young people, and building relationships with teachers, and Head Teachers in schools.
- Experience of facilitating theatre workshops/projects desirable but not essential.
- Experience in using digital technology and social media as part of a broad communications strategy.
- Excellent project management and organisational skills with a proven track record of delivering projects on budget and within deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- A thorough knowledge of the requirements for working with young people in a theatre setting.
- A good working knowledge of school culture and the education system.
- Some awareness of relevant educational research and evaluation models.
- Self-motivated and the ability to work in a self-directed way with the highest attention to detail and commitment to delivering quality outcomes.
- Willingness to work flexibly.
