The Role
We have an opportunity for a Group Leader, within the Sizewell C Design Authority function. This is one of the largest megaprojects in the UK, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy. Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C, the SZC project has obtained planning approval and government financing support. The project is now seeking private investment with a view to starting construction in 2025.
The vacancy is within the Safety Case Branch of SZC Design Authority. The Safety Case Production Group Lead will report to the Safety Case Branch Manager and is responsible for leading the development of various sections of the Pre-Construction Safety Report under Licence Condition 14 arrangements.
The Group Leader role requires the successful candidate to be:
• Line manager for a team of Safety Case Engineers. This includes all aspects of technical direction, pastoral care and career development of team members;
• Part of a multi-disciplined Design Authority function of around 25 professional scientists and engineers providing support to the SZC project;
• Responsible for planning and budget control for their Group;
• Responsible for overview of the technical ownership of topic areas within their team related to the SZC safety case within the SZC project;
• Responsible for establishing and maintaining links with the supply chain, other parts of the SZC project, other parts of EDF, and the regulators in all relevant matters;
• Based in Gloucester Business Park (or flexible as required) with occasional working at other SZC Project locations in the UK and France.
SZC is a replicated design from HPC so you’ll need to provide influence and direction to ensure maximum benefit is realised from the reuse of the HPC design and safety case.
The Person
A Group Leader with senior stakeholder management skills, organisational skills and experience within regulated industries will thrive in this role. We’ll value your existing skills and experience while providing the opportunity for individuals with an agile approach, and mind set, to develop their career.
What does being an effective Group Leader in the SZC Project mean?
• Putting safety, health and mental well-being first.
• Maintaining trained and motivated team members.
• Delivering of the team’s objectives to quality, schedule and budget.
• Ensuring accuracy and completeness of records.
• Continually driving innovation and simplification.
The Skills
We are committed to developing people and have comprehensive training courses & programmes. We encourage applications from people from any background, hence the desirable attributes should be considered a guide, but not an application requirement. We hope that the applicants would have the following skills:
• Experience of working in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industries.
• Experience in safety case development, including design, substantiation, verification & validation, and safety justification of systems, structures, and components.
• Demonstrable experience of managing or mentoring individuals/team, including understanding of the requirements of a team and the ability to communicate and report on performance.
• Demonstrable knowledge of approaches to budgetary and resource planning, managing and reviewing.
• Good communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholder.
• Degree in a relevant science or engineering subject (or equivalent).

Sizewell C Limited (Sizewell C) is nuclear site licensed company whose business is to design, finance, construct, commission, operate, maintain, and eventually decommission the nuclear power plant and related infrastructure at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Sizewell C was formerly under the majority ownership of the EDF Group but is currently majority owned by HM Government and operates as an independent company. EDF remains a key shareholder in Sizewell C and the business therefore maintains close links to EDF as a part of its ‘nuclear family’.
As a Sizewell C employee, you may wonder why you are contacted by colleagues with an EDF email, or see the EDF logo on portals that you access and/or documentation you receive; this is because we have partnered with EDF for the provision of a number of support services whilst we complete a successful transition out of the EDF group.
