London UK, UK, United Kingdom Acumen Design Associates Full time

CMF Design Lead

Acumen is a successful transport and product design consultancy with particular expertise in the aircraft interiors sector for commercial airline customers. Acumen is seeking a creative individual to join the team as CMF Design Lead with a minimum of 4 yrs experience in aircraft interior design.

Your primary role is to work as part of the branding and design CMF team alongside the Brand Experience Director, with responsibility to lead the colour, materials and finishes for all projects. The CMF Design Lead will manage and oversee the work of the CMF designers in the team , providing creative direction, industry knowledge and supporting their career development.

The majority of work is for aviation seating and cabin interior projects, but other product sectors will sometimes require CMF input. As part of the CMF team, you will work with our global clients to interpret their brand into remarkable experiences, through colour , materials and finishes. As such the roles will require international travel and a genuine interest and understanding in different cultures. We are looking for well organised individuals, with a passion for materials and material development, who will be comfortable project managing and documenting programs as well as contributing creatively into all our design work.

There is a substantial amount of research, design and development required across a wide spectrum of materials - such as pattern generation, fabric design and colour development. We work very closely with an international supply chain and maintaining good lines of communication with these suppliers is also key to these roles.

Key Responsibilities

Typically, projects fall into four stages and CMF support will be required through all:

Discover - Research and Concept Generation:

Research and analysis of current market, evaluating competitors, brand history and heritage. Using your knowledge of current consumer, product and colour trends to help build client presentations in the form of mood boards, material boards, keyshot and photoshop visuals and electronic presentations. Plus participating in in-house creative brainstorming meetings. Gathering insights and trend forecasting from key design fairs such as AIX in Hamburg, Milan Furniture Fair – Salone del Mobile will actively be encouraged in this role.

Design - Concept Development and Refinement: Using client feedback from initial concept presentation to develop unique schemes embodying the client’s brand values alongside the aspirations of their target customers. Matching this with achievable developments in materials , finishes and sometimes accessories. Working with the airfame manufactures (Airbus/Boeing) to ensure all their procedural requirements and milestones are met in a timely manner, and to the correct certification standards.

Develop - Design Development & Detail: Working with the product design team, external visualisers, client, manufacturers & material suppliers to achieve client approval of all CMF – developed to final production samples. Documenting all finishes in detailed specification documents for the client and manufacturers to implement. The candidate must be able to write clear design briefs for suppliers and visualisers to translate the concept in to materials and high-quality renders. Support weekly client and manufacturer calls or meetings.

Deliver - Implementation: Working with manufacturers to fine tune and deliver CMF solutions and materials. Sourcing materials for mock-ups, finalising CMF documentation, attending client and supplier meetings where necessary. Trouble shooting any last minute change of requirements.

CMF development will primarily involve:

· Bespoke fabrics and carpets

· Printed decorative laminates

· Paint colours and finishes

· Plastic colours and finishes

· Leather colours & textures

· Dress cover designs

· Amenities and Accessories

However, a variety of different creative challenges tend to emerge during a programme, and it is part of the role to be looking for potential new finishes and decorative effects which can be implemented. An interest in sustainability is vital, aligning innovative techniques with environmental responsibility. Other aspects of the role are to maintain and update the materials library in the design office and support and maintain relationships with key suppliers.

Core Capabilities

  • An ability to combine technical knowledge with creative intuition.
  • Understanding and implementing the impact of CMF on brand values to meet customer needs.
  • A critical eye when it comes to colour, material and finish design and execution.

  • global client and supplier base.
