About this role:

The Global Head of Country Risk is responsible for overseeing management of Wells Fargo's country risk, which is the risk resulting from economic, political or social conditions and events in a non-US country negatively impact the bank's financial condition or resilience. This is a senior role with responsibility for all aspects of country risk, requiring strong team leadership, proactive engagement with senior management, and ability to identify key emerging risks and proactively communicate these risks to key internal stakeholders.

In this role, you will:
  • Have overall responsibility for Wells Fargo's country risk framework, including responsibility for country risk policies, procedures and rating methodology.
  • Responsibility for managing the team that provides country risk ratings for all geographies where Wells Fargo has exposure, including monitoring and assessing all key macroeconomic and political developments outside of the U.S., and flagging emerging risks to key internal stakeholders in a timely and insightful manner.
  • Responsibility for Risk Boundary methodology, including discussion with relevant internal stakeholders across the business to ensure boundaries reflect both risk appetite and business strategy.
  • Regulatory engagement across all aspects of country risk, leading conversations with US regulators in particular around key emerging economic and political risks, as well as outlining rationale behind material changes in non-US exposures.
  • Ensure country risk aligns with Wells Fargo's robust risk and control environment, including regular interaction with key control partners, and operational and compliance teams.
Required Qualifications:
  • Extensive Country/Sovereign risk experience at a leading financial institution, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education.
  • Experience of team management, ideally across multiple geographies.
  • Experience with developing quantitate models for estimating probabilities of country/sovereign risk credit events.
  • Experience of communicating complex issues to senior level management.
  • Academic qualification (Masters degree or above) in macroeconomics preferred.
  • Experience in Credit Risk, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
Job Expectations:
  • Take direct accountability for the country risk assessment process, including ensuring country risk methodology is best-in-class and fit for purpose, timely and accurate assessment all countries ratings, and flagging key emerging macroeconomic and/or political risks to key internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, to ensure that country risks are clearly understood among senior management, and that the bank's approach to country risk is an appropriate reflection of the bank's risk appetite and international strategy.
  • Develop team performance to ensure a high level of engagement and inclusion, focusing on team member career development and team profile within the bank.
  • Take ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the country risk framework aligns to Wells Fargo's risk and control environment.
