Reporting to the Head of Fundamental Analysis, the Gas Trading Analyst connects data, analysis, and market information to create and distribute a consistent, comprehensive and trusted view of the global gas market. The principal customer is the gas trading desk in London, but also the global network of trading desks and analysts (including Singapore, Beijing, Calgary etc.)

This role primarily contributes to the company’s profitability through the rigorous and systematic construction, maintenance and analysis of European supply and demand fundamentals, the understanding of their interaction with price and the interpretation of market developments. Further value is contributed by the utilisation of this analytical infrastructure to assist with specific strategies and trading decisions with the analyst providing the statistical background to trading strategies from inception to close. The Gas Analyst is an integral part of the company’s trading business.


Responsibilities


  • Work as part of a team to build, develop and maintain a fundamental supply/demand model for the European gas market
  • Distribute analysis and views in a timely, structured and pro-active manner
  • Perform market analysis on a reactive basis in reaction to requests from the trading desks, in particular with regards to the development of new products and trading strategies
  • Own and drive the development of gas market analysis work, ensuring analysis is focused on delivering practical business benefits
  • Integrate analysis into the trader’s decision making process, creating a systematic framework for profitable trading strategies
  • Devise effective methods of visually displaying the opportunities and risks available in the European gas market
  • Collaboratively and proactively work with the other parts of the global gas business (largely LNG) and external contacts to broaden knowledge and enhance analysis
  • Utilise technology to increase the efficiency and automation of gas market analysis including capturing and interpreting data and producing reports/tools for traders


Person Requirements


  • Graduate with a Bachelor, Masters or PhD degree in mathematics, science, engineering, computer science, economics, quantitative or related field from a leading university
  • Prior experience of successful gas market analysis for a trading desk in an energy market trading environment; utilities, producers or trading houses preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of the physical and financial gas markets, also of the LNG and power markets.
  • Previous work experience in small, high-performance teams a distinct advantage.

  • Programming skills (e.g. SQL, Python etc.) and experience of utilising large data sets
  • Demonstrable ability to learn new skills and adapt to market developments


The successful candidate must have permission to work in the UK by the start of their employment.
