About the roleThe role is full-time, based in our Central London office, but involves significant travel to existing and prospective customer’s steelmaking sites in Europe and North America.
As the primary technical resource for our Commercial team, you'll share your product expertise through presentations, demonstrations, and pre-engineering studies. You'll work closely with steelmakers to understand their challenges, technical processes, and existing systems, then help to design tailored solutions. During the sales cycle, you'll collaborate with our Commercial and Product teams to guide prospective customers through pre-engineering studies. This process will showcase ScrapChef's ability to meet and exceed requirements while building valuable, long-lasting relationships with customers.
Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to work cross-functionally with our Product team, sharing insights to ensure successful implementations for new customers.
- As a member of our commercial team, you'll work directly with our cross-functional product/engineering team. You'll collaborate across the company to identify and solve real-world problems for each customer.
- You will spend significant time explaining and exploring our product at new customer sites. This includes spending time on the shop floor at manufacturing facilities, scoping out customer requirements and using this understanding to help the Commercial team close deals, and the Product team deliver customer success.
- You will be empowered to make meaningful decisions that are not limited by job domains or onerous processes.
- In the office, you will spend the majority of your time working on the technical aspects of the deals that are most important for the company to achieve its objectives.
- During site visits you will think on your feet, independently informing the customer on technical matters and making autonomous commercial decisions.
We are open minded about exact professional experience and university qualifications. That said, we do expect:
- One of:
- Experience in technical sales / customer relationships in the steel industry, providing you with credibility, technical expertise; OR
- Experience closing Enterprise-sized startup deals for technically complex opportunities through advanced competitive knowledge, technical skill, and credibility.
- And:
- An understanding of web services (HTTP APIs), data processing, ETL processes, SQL, and spreadsheets.
- An understanding of cloud-based platforms and services (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP).
For your information, we use Python as our primary programming language and strongly believe in the value of open source software. Our current tech stack includes: GCP, k8s, postgres, BigQuery, dbt but we do not expect you to have specific experience of these things.
We would also expect that:
- Travelling and working directly with customers in steel plants around the world is something that excites you.
- You have a passion for solving difficult problems using software, and you want the opportunity to enable technical validations like our pre-engineering studies.
- You enjoy being part of a team. You are willing and able to explain your reasoning to others.
- You take initiative and are extremely reliable. You are comfortable with and enjoy having significant autonomy, including self-direction.
- You are conscientious and pragmatic. You complete projects.
Finally, as many of our potential and existing customers are outside of the UK, language skills are an advantage. Particularly any of German, French, Spanish, and/or Italian.

CompensationTotal compensation is £50k - £90k base + bonus/commission and is composed of salary and stock options. We are open to a wide range of experience so the range of total compensation reflects that.
