Who You Are

You are a skilled tradesperson with qualifications such as City and Guilds plumbing NVQ 2 or Carpentry NVQ 3, and Multi-skilled NVQ 3 or equivalent. You possess a good level of literacy and numeracy and have demonstrated evidence of continued professional and personal development. You understand the delivery of maintenance and refurbishment contracts, as well as relevant legislation including Health & Safety, Building Regulations, and Fire Regulations. You have experience in the building and trades industry, working independently and within teams, and providing excellent customer service. Your aptitudes include problem-solving, decision-making, workload planning, and effective use of information technology.

What the Job Involves

The role involves providing skilled workmanship within building trades, maintaining and improving Southwark’s housing and property stock. You will self-manage your work, liaise with customers for smooth job completion, and provide high-quality service focused on meeting council targets. Responsibilities include installation, repairs, maintenance, and inspection of equipment in housing stock, carrying out multi-skilled repair activities, maintaining knowledge and skills, ensuring Health & Safety compliance, and providing support to apprentices and trainees. You will work across various properties in the Borough, manage a vehicle for duty, maintain tools and materials, and adopt modern working methods using mobile technology. The job requires you to plan and organize workloads, adhere to regulations, and promote excellent customer care. You will work 40 hours a week from Monday to Friday, with the possibility of flexible working across different locations and participating in an out-of-hours service rota. Van and fuel are provided.
