Job Description - Director of Operations
Champion Timber has 10 branches based in the South East and we are looking to expand our team. This is a great role for someone who is looking to develop their career and industry knowledge with a dynamic, forward-thinking business that likes to train their employees so that they progress within the company. The ideal candidate is a highly analytical leader who will join our senior management team.
Overall Aim
Manage and support all aspects of branch operations in order to achieve and exceed budgeted sales, improve cost efficiencies, open new branches and enable substantially increased sales through the website.
Branch Operations
Contribute to achieving a competitive branch wage to sale ratio (circa 12% to be agreed) by ensuring the collected and delivered sales to customers are at the highest standards and the supply, delivery and storage of products to be as efficient as possible
Identify efficiencies/sales opportunities and propose clear business cases to agree investments and action them
To agree manpower calculations and work closely with the HR Business Partner to ensure branches operate with the correct number of appropriately trained employees in line with business objectives and KPIs.
Ensure all operational aspects applying to customer service objectives are met, resulting in a minimum 75% Net Promoter Score/minimum 4.6 star rating for collections and deliveries
Work closely with Sales to devise and implement practical processes including merchandising to achieve 96% availability on all product lines and achieve 98% stock accuracy by adjusting the provision for racking and storage as appropriate and ensuring stock procedures from receiving goods to sales and stock checks
Ensure means of handling storage and housekeeping that deliver the absolute minimum of loss or damage (currently at 0.5%)
Foster and maintain links with IT providers over and above e.g. Epicor to stay ahead of best practice. Raise transactional or IT issues that need to be improved, to be straight forward/ fail safe and agree solutions and action
Fully understands core principles of the AW Champion branch operational template and refine it to improve existing branch operations and evaluate potential new sites to be able to open new branches
Data Protection Officer (DPO) for the Company, responsible for overseeing data protection strategy to ensure compliance with GDPR requirements.
Health and Safety
Take prime responsibility for managing the Company Health, Safety and Welfare Policy to ensure that all Company operations have reduced risk as far as reasonably practicable and they are regularly reviewed, prioritised and upgraded as required to achieve best practice
In line with the Company’s Health and Safety Policy including Management of contracts of all necessary plant, equipment and buildings and management of all 3rd party contractors and consultants
Monitor branch compliance to daily, weekly and monthly routine checks on plant, equipment, transport and premises checks
Working with HR and managers to ensure staff are working as trained and the training is fit for purpose, timely and complied with
Transport
Line management of the Group Transport Manager to ensure the Transport department exceeds FORS and legislative requirements and provides a highly profitable service
In line with the AW Champion branch operational template consistently refine the picking and loading methods to proactively facilitate and increase delivered business by providing a class leading local delivery service with a 98% OTIF success rate
Review and negotiate transport contracts to enable an efficient and successful delivery service
Budget Setting and Management
To pro-actively take part in the budgeting process alongside Sales, Buying, HR and Accounts
To agree manpower calculations and get agreement to realistic operational wage cost budgets and ensure they are met
Create and get agreement to budget to maintain all the branch buildings, plant and equipment, including racking, machines, forklifts etc. To maintain existing and buy new to improve efficiencies and costs
Identify and manage continuous improvements and reduction in costs
Manage schedules, contracts and expenditure to ensure all branches are well maintained, bright and clean in all areas at all times
Manage all transport costs to achieve a safe, certified and totally reliable resource at an ever improving cost to sale ratio
Leadership
Provide clear standards, clarity and consistency to all operational activities for the Company to gain commitment for all staff to achieve them
In conjunction with Sales and HR develop the capacity of the management team to optimise sales and profitability through training, coaching and performance management set against the KPIs
Work closely with HR department to attract high quality, capable staff with the minimum of staff churn
General
Undertake any other duties as directed by the Board commensurate with the post
Participate in all training necessary to facilitate the role effectively
Essential Experience
Held a senior management or director position in a £50m+ business
Previous experience in retail operations or distribution
Holds a current Health & Safety qualification e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH or similar
A proven senior manager with strong strategic perspective and commercial ability
Has set and successfully controlled Cost Budgets in excess of £10m for each of wages and overheads
