Job Description:

Johnson Matthey, a FTSE 100 company and a global leader in sustainable technologies, is seeking a Lead Project Controls and Instrumentation Engineer to join their Central Engineering & Capital Projects Engineering Team. This role will be responsible for managing engineering activities across a range of projects within the company's portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the delivery and performance of Controls and Instrumentation design on complex projects in a regulated industry.
  • Ensure effective technical coordination with EPCM contractors, internal teams, and third-party representatives.
  • Lead internal and external problem-solving to arrive at appropriate engineering decisions.
  • Conduct studies to determine requirements for new/modified facilities, equipment, and systems.
  • Prepare relevant specification documents in adherence to procedures.
  • Act as a single point of contact for all Controls and Instrumentation engineering issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead dialogue with external parties, including equipment vendors.
  • Engage with key Johnson Matthey functions (Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, etc.) to ensure designs meet expectations.
  • Manage change control, close out hazard study items, address technical queries, and resolve open issues.
  • Ensure relevant Health & Safety risk assessments are conducted and closed out promptly.
  • Actively promote a positive safety culture across engineering and capital projects.
  • Contribute to the wider Johnson Matthey Engineering team and participate in developing and implementing engineering strategies.
  • Provide technical expertise and engineering direction for major projects as the Controls and Instrumentation discipline lead.
  • Input into key front-end project deliverables (concept selection, basis of design, basis for estimate documents).
  • Support the development of CAPEX project scopes for new and upgraded/replacement Controls and Instrumentation infrastructure.
  • Identify the appropriate application of industry engineering codes, standards, practices, and design guides for CAPEX projects.

Requirements:

  • Process/Process Control Engineering degree (Essential).
  • Membership of a recognized engineering institution (Preferred).
  • At least 5 years of experience as a lead Controls & Instrumentation engineer in a multi-disciplinary engineering team through the full project lifecycle (Essential).
  • At least 5-10 years of experience as a Controls & Instrumentation engineer in Front End Engineering and Detail Engineering on batch chemical or primary pharmaceutical projects valued at £5-60M+ (Essential).
  • At least 5 years of experience as a lead engineer in front-end engineering and detail engineering (Essential).
  • Experience in delivering complex engineering scopes in multi-stakeholder brownfield sites with continuously operated process facilities (Essential).
  • Experience working with EPCM contractors (Desirable).
  • Proven knowledge and experience in capital projects and operations within highly regulated and high-hazard industries (Essential).
  • Delivery-focused and a self-starter, with a track record of achieving challenging goals within business-critical timescales while working under pressure (Essential).
  • Courage to question or challenge issues and collaborate with stakeholders to drive resolution (Essential).
  • Control and Instrument Experience with a recognized industry (Essential).
  • In-depth knowledge of basic instrumentation and control, including flow, level, pressure, temperature, and process analysis (Essential).
  • Experience in instrument selection in relation to process applications (Essential).
  • Knowledge and experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and their implementation (Essential).
