Main Purpose of Job:

To develop and maintain the Cyber Security capability, aligned to the overall IS and strategy, to ensure that the business remains cyber secure and achieves the required accreditations.

Key Responsibilities:

This technical hands-on role is responsible for developing and maintaining the Infrastructure cyber security capability.

1) Technical Leadership

· Analyse technical solutions to help protect against and mitigate security vulnerabilities.

· Design, maintain and test recovery procedures for all critical systems.

· Implement and oversee the monitoring of on-premise and cloud-based computer systems, networks and applications.

· Develop and deliver a programme of planned independent security assessments. including penetration tests, hardware & software compliance, and PCI, and ensure any gaps are addressed.

· Work with external stakeholders and information security groups including DCMS, NCSC and accreditor organisations and others to improve cyber security standards.

· Oversee the security review of third-party suppliers and systems.

· Manage the Cyber Essentials, GovAssure and ISO27001 annual accreditation processes.

· Keep abreast of emerging security trends, risks, new guidance or standards and security technologies.

· Promote cyber security awareness across the business by developing and implementing a security awareness and training programme to staff at all levels.

· Produce regular security reports for the IS Leadership.

2) Operational & Project Support

· Investigate suspected and actual security incidents, producing recommendations and ensuring any remedial action is taken.

· Act as the Incident Manager during cyber security incidents or threats and provide on-going communication with the IS Leadership.


Other duties as assigned

The IS department is going through a number of systematic and structural changes to meet a large number of evolving demands. These come from external sources such as the UK government, IT industry in the forms of data governance and system compliance as well as from internal customers

relying increasingly on technology to deliver services, such as academic learning, funded research projects, ticketing, sales and traditional line of business functions such as HR and Finance.


Like most industries, we are moving rapidly towards cloud services. This dynamic is radically changing the way services are defined and delivered by breaking down the traditional methods of delivering services. The post holder will need to embrace new technology and structural changes in order to support the business to progressively and consistently move in the right direction.


The postholder will be expected to complete their own role with minimal supervision, escalating to the Head of Technical Services as required.
