Purpose of Job


The Data Analyst will support the Data Analytics team to deliver the function’s core capabilities and services. They t will support the Data Analytics Team to develop and mature analytical capabilities across SMBC EMEA. They will also work with wider EMEA Data Office to deliver against our new Data Strategy for SMBC.


A primary objective will be to work with internal stakeholders to turn their data into actionable insights which deliver business value to support our strategic objectives. The Data Analyst will also support the roll-out and adoption of self-serve analytics.


We are seeking an enthusiastic problem solver who is keen to get involved at the early part of an exciting journey for the bank. The role will be involved in some interesting work including innovative prototyping, small projects, and larger programs of work.

Background

The EMEA Data Office was established in October 2021. It sits within EMEA Operations in the Operations Planning Department (OPPD), covering all EMEA entities (including Securities and Banking subsidiaries) and all datasets. The Data Office is responsible for defining and implementing the EMEA Data Strategy, building out its data management capabilities, and focusing on how we exploit data more effectively and innovatively across SMBC.


We have been formed to really drive data-led transformation through the bank. As part of this work, the EMEA Data Office has established a new framework which encompasses cultural, behavioural, procedural, and system transformation to deliver the new strategy. This initially focused on good governance through improved Data Architecture, Data Management and Data Quality, but as the foundations are established, we are focusing more on how we can use Data to drive new ways of working and improved business outcomes.


Facts/ Scale

The EMEA Data Office has grown quickly to have over fifty members (permanent employees, contractors, and consultants) in less than 3 years, and this is expected to grow further over the next 2-3 years.


This role will be part of Data Analytics Team within the EMEA Data Office. The team consist of a mixture of permanent employees, contractors, and consultants. We provide a set of core analytics capabilities for the organisation and deliver products for strategic programs and business projects.


This role is not expected to line manage any other roles in the team but would be involved in providing training, for the wider Analytics Community.


Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Preparing and transforming data for use in analytics products using appropriate tooling and techniques
  • Delivering new analytics products using best practice data analysis and data visualisation techniques to translate complex data into insightful reports and interactive dashboards.
  • Supporting the delivery of proofs-of-concept to test feasibility and value, uncovering benefits for our stakeholders, customers, and businesses.
  • Delivering sessions on best practice for data analysis and data visualisation as well as providing in-house training.
  • Developing templates, best practice guidance and standards for use by the EMEA Analytics Community.
  • Supporting the rollout and driving the adoption of Self-Serve Analytics.
  • Working with the analysts embedded within business teams to help them create data visualisations content which will harness their data assets and turn them into actionable insights.
  • Identifying cross-functional use-cases where data analysis and data visualisation techniques can be applied to deliver business value.
  • Presenting interesting insights to the wider business.
  • Collaborating with the wider data family, including analysts, engineers, and product managers
  • Supporting the implementation of the EMEA Data Strategy Framework


Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications


Essential:

  • Strong experience with using Power BI and/or Tableau to develop insightful and interactive data driven dashboards.
  • Core competency in SQL programming and its use in developing analytics products.
  • Strong data manipulation and preparation skills with experience of using Alteryx or similar applications.
  • Ability to maintain, support and change analytics products like Tableau or Power BI Dashboards using appropriate version control methodologies.
  • Solid understanding of the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) Testing as relevant to analytics and experience of applying appropriate testing methodologies to quality assure development.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • A good understanding of basic statistical concepts
  • A good understanding of, and experience of applying, project management principles and approaches like waterfall and agile.
  • Experience of training others in the use of Tableau and/or Power BI.
  • Experience of working in the financial services industry and knowledge of data related regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working in a data team and collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify, scope and develop data analytics solutions.
  • An outstanding problem solver who has an analytical mindset, is inquisitive, innovative, and excellent with technology enabling a creative approach to solution scoping and delivery.
  • Ability to plan and manage own work with minimal supervision.


Desirable:

  • Tableau and/or Power BI certification
  • Experience of developing analytics products using the full Microsoft Office stack – Power Query, Power Automate, Power BI, Power Apps
  • Solid experience of statistical techniques and hands on statistical modelling experience
  • Experience of working in an organisation that has rolled out self-serve analytics tooling at enterprise level.
  • Proficiency with at least one data science programming language e.g. R, Python
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and issues within the Data Analytics and Data Science landscapes
  • Experience working with cloud environments & components (e.g. on Google Cloud Platform or equivalent)


Challenges

  • This is a greenfield opportunity where capability needs will be built from scratch.
  • There is limited understanding of the opportunities from new data and analytics capabilities, and therefore good project and communication skills are required
