Health & Safety Manager | Bedford | 37 hours per week - Mon to Fri: 9am- 5pm | from £31,000
Our client was born out of heartfelt concern for homeless people, starting as a soup kitchen in 1974 to support vulnerable people in Bedford - today the organisation has grown to provide accommodation and support to ensure individuals can progress towards a life free from homelessness.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Facilities Management Team as their Health & Safety Manager. Reporting to the Head of Facilities, you will lead the Health & Safety function, ensuring the safety of colleagues and customers.
You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and standards. Additionally, you will play a key role in fostering and maintaining a positive safety culture throughout the company.
This field-based role requires a valid full UK driving licence.
Key responsibilities include developing and implementing the Health and Safety strategy for 2024-2026 and promoting a positive health and safety culture across the trust.
Are you the right person for the job?
- NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Diploma qualified
- A good understanding of the Health & Safety at work act 1974
- Good communication skills both verbally and written in report format or investigation format
- A broad and sympathetic approach to issues, willingness to contribute hands-on to resolving ongoing and new safety issues as they arise
- Confident presentation skills and ability to liaise with managers at all levels
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Experience in creating and developing a safety-focused culture
- Computer literate and competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc)
What will your key responsibilities be?
- Manage the Health & Safety Management Systems (policies, training, auditing etc) to ensure the organisation meets its Health & Safety requirements
- Respond appropriately and professionally to internal and external queries
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal systems and practices
- Work in partnership with stakeholders and offer support, and deliver appropriate solutions and interventions to the organisation to promote effective risk management and effective working practices
- To monitor and supervise the accident reporting procedures, including the correct notification to the Health and Safety Executive and other relevant organisations (e.g. local authorities) in accordance with RIDDOR regulations (when required) – in particular, the investigation of all serious accidents and incidents
- To prevent these incidents in report format on a regular basis and review trends to reduce/prevent reoccurrence
- To write and monitor Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Working to ensure best practices are observed and all documents reviewed annually or before in the case of a serious accident or incident
- To write, where required, specific individual risk assessments (for example expectant mothers, teammates with specific challenges) to ensure they can work safely
