Purpose of Role

Support the Chief Risk Officer, London (London CRO) in carrying out their responsibility for the management of credit risk in respect of Nedbank Limited, London Branch (London Branch), by performing the Key Responsibilities as set out below.


The role will be based at the offices of the London Branch at 12 Arthur Street, London EC4R 9AB.

London Branch forms part of the Corporate and Investment Banking Cluster of Nedbank Limited (CIB) and the role will have a dual reporting line into the London CRO and into the Head of CIB Africa Credit.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all credit risks are identified, monitored and controlled effectively, and that London Branch establishes and maintains appropriate credit risk management controls, systems, policies and procedures in line with applicable legal, regulatory and group requirements.
  • Provide independent, high quality SME credit risk assessments and recommendations for (a) corporate, financial institution and sovereign counterparties, issuers and clients, and (b) country risks, and to ensure that those assessments are formally reviewed in line with credit policy. These include assets in Investment Banking (IB), Transactional Services (TS), Property Finance (PF), Treasury and Global Markets businesses which are booked in London Branch.
  • Attend, actively participate and exercise a voting mandate on behalf of London Branch in LCC and various other internal credit committee meetings and under various credit mandates in relation to credit matters pertaining to the London Branch.
  • Monitor that all applicable credit applications (proposals/excess advice/reports) are submitted and approved in accordance with the relevant credit policy guidelines and mandates, and all ratings and limits are loaded correctly.
  • Ensure that credit exposures and losses are accurately reported in accordance with policy and monitor on a regular basis adherence to approved credit limits.
  • Ensure that credit limit breaches are reported in accordance with policy.
  • Analyse and interpret financial, market and business information in order to identify the various credit risks pertaining to a client and suggest/recommend risk mitigants and related mitigating factors, and to make appropriate recommendations.
  • Determine or improve (as applicable) the methodology for accurately (i) calculating and monitoring credit exposures from new and existing products and business, and (ii) measuring and monitoring portfolio credit risks.
  • Develop, prepare and, if necessary, present reports on the London Branch asset portfolio and credit risk management for Regulators, London Credit Committee (LCC) and other internal Nedbank Group committees and stakeholders (including key insights on the industry, sector and clients).
  • Seek opportunities to improve credit processes and systems by identifying and recommending effective ways to operate and manage credit risk.
  • Review and develop credit risk related frameworks, policies, charters and procedures for London Branch and if necessary, localise applicable Group/CIB frameworks, policies, charters and procedures, and monitor compliance therewith and report any breaches thereof to senior management.
  • Manage and monitor service level arrangements in respect of the credit services provided by the South African Head Office, including the flow of management information and service review meetings.
  • Provide support, guidance, advice and assistance to all business areas on all credit-related matters, including meeting clients (existing and prospective), structuring of prospective transactions to mitigate credit risk appropriately and, if applicable, completing credit proposals and presenting those proposals to Head Office.
  • Report and escalate material risk events, including conduct risk events and conflicts of interest, or losses to senior management.
  • Proactively monitor and react to laws, regulations, news and other market/industry/sector information that indicate changes in applicable credit and country risks.
  • Procure and/or provide credit risk training to relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to the London Credit Administrator in respect of LCC meetings, packs, reports and management information, and overseeing the credit administration of London Branch.
  • Sound relations with all relevant stakeholders (including credit and relevant business teams in South Africa) through collaboration, teamwork and knowledge sharing.


Key Technical Skills & Qualifications

  • Educated to degree and/or appropriate professional qualification level.
  • Considerable post graduate experience in a wholesale banking credit environment.
  • Strong experience in analysing credit risks of all types and experience of implementing credit risk management frameworks.
  • A good understanding of a broad range of wholesale banking and treasury products, services and processes and a strong understanding of the sources of credit risk in such products.
  • A good understanding of the applicable UK legal and regulatory framework.
