Location: United Kingdom (full-time), hybrid work. Our office is in the Southwark area, and we expect our team members to come in a couple days a week to the office.

Start date: As soon as possible, but we know this can be difficult when factoring in notice periods, so we are open to have the right person join later.

Travel requirements: In this role you will be expected to travel once a quarter to our HQ in Lagos.


About the role:

As the Director of Operations, Onboarding at Moniepoint, you’ll report directly to the VP of Product - Onboarding. You will have a huge responsibility for building and managing an international department and team from scratch, to handle the manual customer onboarding activities for KYC (Know Your Customer) operations. This role involves executing additional checks when automated systems are insufficient or further verification is required before account opening and for ongoing monitoring. Your expertise will ensure compliance with UK (and other relevant markets) regulations and support our multi-market expansion strategy. If you have extensive experience in setting up customer onboarding operations for regulated fintech companies and are passionate about creating robust, compliant processes, this is the role for you


Responsibilities:

  • Build and lead a high-performing customer onboarding (KYC) operations team in Nigeria and other regions as needed, ensuring adherence to UK regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Develop and implement KYC procedures for manual checks when automated systems are not applicable, ensuring thorough and compliant customer onboarding.
  • Travel as necessary (quarterly) to Nigeria and other regions to support and build the team, particularly in the early stages. We have our main company headquarters in Lagos, and already have a well established business and team locally, so you will have support locally when building out your department.
  • Collaborate closely with compliance teams to ensure all onboarding processes meet UK and international regulatory standards.
  • Set up and manage processes for multiple markets, including the UK, Nigeria, Kenya, the US, and other EU regions, to handle diverse regulatory requirements.
  • Train and develop local leaders in Nigeria and other African markets to oversee day-to-day onboarding activities and ensure operational excellence.
  • Foster a culture of meticulous attention to detail and high standards of document review to prevent fraud and ensure compliance.
  • Provide input into the development and customization of internal tools to improve onboarding efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Transition from an operational focus to a strategic one, continuously improving onboarding processes and contributing to the overall growth strategy.
  • Manage and inspire a diverse, distributed team, navigating cultural differences and promoting an inclusive work environment.
  • Monitor performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions to enhance the onboarding process.


Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in building and managing KYC operations and teams for a regulated fintech or electronic money institution (EMI) in the UK.
  • You have worked in an early stage fast paced fintech start-up or scale-up. We need a leader who is excited about this, who is comfortable in a rapidly changing environment
  • You're an ambitious leader, who is comfortable making quick decisions on their own, who can quickly hire and build an incredible team, and can guide your teams on how to do things the right way, while moving fast.
  • Proven track record in setting up and leading distributed teams across multiple countries, with a focus on customer onboarding and KYC operations.
  • Ability to travel frequently, especially to Nigeria, for team setup, training, and process implementation.
  • This goes without saying, but a curiosity to learn about the payments landscape in Africa, and a deep interest in being a part of Moniepoint’s mission, to help millions of people achieve financial happiness and success across Africa, is a must
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach to setting up processes for reviewing documents and verifying customer information.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing teams, including remote and cross-cultural teams.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex regulatory requirements and operational procedures clearly.
  • Cultural awareness and experience working with teams from diverse backgrounds.
