General Summary

The Business Development Manager – London is responsible for organising a range of business development activities relevant to the London office practices and lawyers, as well as taking a leading role on firmwide BD initiatives. The BD Manager is responsible for ensuring that business development initiatives of the London office are integrated and consistent with the Firm’s strategies and policies. The BD Manager is expected to perform all job duties with a commitment to providing superior service to clients, producing work product of the highest quality, and fostering an atmosphere of teamwork and continuous improvement.



The position involves working closely in a team environment with Firm BD&C staff and the

London office to:


  • Ensure that all BD initiatives of the London office are compliant with Firm policies, procedures and strategic priorities
  • Facilitate communication within the London office and with firmwide Business Development & Communications
  • Support business development activities in the London office and collaborate with BD team on firmwide activities/initiatives
  • Track experience of London attorneys and work with U.S. team to maintain updated experience database
  • Coordinate drafting of local legal directory, recognition and awards submissions for the London office
  • Convene regular meetings with the London attorneys to review performance against agreed business development objectives and communicate findings and action plans to the Global Director of Business Development and Communications
  • Provide support, sometimes in a lead role, for development and execution of firmwide BD initiatives, such as practice group BD efforts (maintaining a regular schedule of BD meetings, developing agendas for those meetings, and broadly supporting the practices with profile-raising activities)
  • Assist with cross-office identification of key client targets, tracking of client contacts and follow-up
  • Ensure that client events are well executed
  • Create and manage the Business Development budget in conjunction with London attorneys and Global Director of Business Development and Communications


The BD Manager must be flexible to changing responsibilities in order to best meet the needs of the department and the London office.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Business Development and Implementation


  1. Work closely with the Global Director of Business Development and Communications to assist in the development and implementation of local and firmwide practice group business and action plans, including coordinating and tracking the group’s efforts to ensure deadlines are met.
  2. Identify, assess and coordinate London office conferences, seminars, forums, sponsorships, and speaking and writing opportunities to ensure they are aligned with the goals of the firm, office and practices.
  3. Coordinate and implement internal and external events and seminars for the London office.
  4. Ensure all efforts are adequately integrated with U.S. initiatives and take lead role on key firmwide projects.
  5. Collaborate with London attorneys to understand our goals within the market and then provide updates regarding new business opportunities, market trends and competitive threats.
  6. Manage client development expenses.
  7. Work closely with the London partners on annual Business Development budgets.



New Business Proposals


  1. Ensure that deal and matter experience is being captured in the Firm’s experience database, is communicated internally through various newsletters and is publicized externally as appropriate.
  2. Prepare proposals/RFP responses in coordination with the lawyers. Track and report on proposal wins and losses.
  3. Provide competitive intelligence reports for partners prior to client meetings.
  4. Promote Firm best practices on pitch and proposal creation including coordination of multipractice, multi-office proposals.
  5. Ensure that the London office’s marketing materials are updated at least quarterly and appropriately reflect practice group experience and expertise.


Marketing-Related BD Functions


  1. Ensure communication to the Director and comms-focused team members of key developments within the London office and involving London-based practices/partners so that these successes can be leveraged for internal and external communications.
  2. Coordinate with the global BD&C team to develop, prepare, and distribute brochures, advertisements, newsletters, and client mailings to promote exposure of the office, practices, and individual lawyers, as appropriate and in alignment with BD goals.
  3. Coordinate with the global BD&C team to maintain and update profiles and bios of London-based lawyers.
  4. In collaboration with the U.S., manage awards entries and directory submissions.


Minimum Job Qualifications


  1. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong writing and editing skills.
  2. Strong work ethic and service orientation.
  3. Commitment to professional growth and development.
  4. Ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions.
  5. Ability to prioritise and manage workload, work independently and as a member of teams, and complete tasks under time pressure as necessary.
  6. Ability to maintain poise, tact and professionalism when interacting with internal and external contacts.
  7. Strong computer skills including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are essential; experience with InterAction and Adobe InDesign is preferred.
  8. Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a marketing-related field.
  9. 5 years of related marketing experience, preferably in a law firm.
