Visualisation & Tools Specialist

London, UK, United Kingdom OC&C Strategy Consultants Full time

OC&C launched the Visualisation & Tools Team two and a half years ago with the purpose of strengthening the internal ability to service both client and internal projects. We are now approaching the second stage of the team’s growth to ensure that OC&C continues to meet client needs in a world of increasing data size, maturing data stacks and new AI-enabled technologies.

The Visualisation & Tools Team has 4 pillars of work:

  • Internal: Reporting and tools explicitly made for internal use with no commercial purpose. This section is dominated by business intelligence reporting but also includes other elements, such as internal surveys.
  • External: This work is on-project client work that involves building end-to-end tools (that may source or transform data) and ready-to-use reporting.
  • Tools: These are larger projects that have a long-term commercial purpose that will eventually feed into multiple client projects. The output may take the form of tools that do repeatable tasks or even as proprietary data set intended for client work long-term. An example of such includes building a user-friendly tool that queries a third-party API to understand client competitor market share.
  • Training: All members of our team are expected to teach and learn from those around them. This includes both formal training of consulting and business services staff but also in the day-to-day role as a current or aspiring subject matter expert.

All four of these pillars are growing and so a larger team is crucial to meeting the needs of the business and our clients. You will be in a position of being able to work with almost everyone in the entire business and will be seen as a driver of critical work and positive change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead internal reporting creation, end-to-end. You’ll be expected to manage internal stakeholders and junior team members, communicate progress and blockers, and deliver your own work relevant to the project.
  • Take part in and, where relevant, own training sessions for your fellow colleagues – both in and outside the team.
  • Lead client project streams delivering tools and reporting. You’ll be expected to deliver, manage and contribute to your steam throughout the project duration, generally focusing on code and visualisation elements.
  • Identify and lead internal initiatives such as building new data repositories or formalising API scripts.

Previous Experience Required:

The visualisation and tools team is one of the growth areas for the firm and we are looking to recruit individuals with 2 - 3 years’ experience as an Analyst or Engineer. We offer competitive remuneration and a stimulating environment that facilitates rapid and well-rounded personal development. We are looking for candidates able to demonstrate excellence in the following areas:

Requirements:

  • 2 - 3 years’ experience as an Analyst or Engineer, at an entry or junior level, performing analysis on and reporting of large datasets
  • Exceptional quantitative and qualitative problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency and working experience in Python, including querying and transforming large datasets, accessing APIs and in creating production code
  • Confident in creating production data models from raw tables

Preferred (not prerequisite):

  • Proficiency in computing languages other than Python, such as SQL or JavaScript
  • Degree in a quantitative subject
  • Experience in documenting, organising, and handing over code in a professional and production manner
  • Experience working with a visualisation software, such as Tableau – especially an existing portfolio of work, such as a Tableau Public profile
  • Direct experience in handling transaction, location, and event data; especially in the retail and leisure industries
  • Experience working with ETL/integration tools such as Workato, Tableau Prep and Alteryx
  • Designing and creating stand-alone tools that query and transform data with a front-end UI

Competencies:

  • Curiosity-driven with a willingness to learn and teach others
  • Self-starter mindset and can-do attitude
  • Comfortable communicating and engaging internal and external stakeholders
  • Collegial and collaborative working style
