We're enabling a zero carbon, lower costenergy future for all, and working hard to decarbonise the planet forgenerations to come.About theroleThe ProjectDirector – BESS (FlexGen) is accountable for leading the development anddelivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects through all stages —from pre-FEED and FEED to detailed design and handover to operations. This role isresponsible for developing and implementing traditional and innovativeengineering solutions that ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective projectoutcomes. The Project Director will organise and manage all project personnel,including owners, engineers, contractors, and construction teams, to deliveragainst technical quality, schedule, and budget requirements. They willoversee project planning, progress tracking, and resource allocation, ensuringall works are executed in accordance with company standards, governance, andsustainability goals.KeyAccountabilities Provide project managementleadership across new growth and FlexGen projects, guiding the developmentactivity of Drax Group. Actively support both existingand new project development to enable future business growth. Coordinate with the ProjectEngineering Manager to manage project consenting, planning, and strategy,ensuring all pre- and post-commencement conditions are efficientlydischarged. Manage relationships with localauthorities, industry partners, and communities to maintain Drax'sreputation and social licence to operate. Maintain and regularlyreview risk registers, proposing and managing risk mitigationmeasures. Ensure collaboration with FinanceBusiness Partners and Commercial Leads to provide accurate projectinformation for financial models and budgets. Develop and manage projectdevelopment and construction budgets in line with corporatestandards. Oversee project performancemonitoring, ensuring all deliverables are achieved on time, to quality,and within budget. Coordinate mobilisationof Operations and Maintenance (O&M) teams for smooth transition tobusiness-as-usual operations. Resolve conflicts between projectfunctions, packages, and EPC contractors as necessary. Communicate project progress,performance, and key risks effectively to the Project Executive andstakeholders. Establish budget management andcontrol processes as part of routine reporting. About You You'll be astrategic leader with deep technical expertise, capable of driving complexenergy storage projects from concept to completion in a fast-evolvingenvironment. Proven experience in creating andimplementing major transformation projects of high strategicimportance.Demonstrated experiencein development and construction of BESS sites within the UK.Experience operating in a clientcapacity, managing EPC/EPCM contractors and Owners' Engineers acrosscomplex, high-value engineering programmes. Desirable: experience workingwithin a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) alongside a developer. Outstanding leadership andtechnical capability, with the ability to manage multiple sites andprojects simultaneously. Proactive Safety Leader,promoting a "Safety First" culture across all areas ofresponsibility. Strong communication andleadership skills, fostering collaboration and inclusion to achievebusiness objectives. Strategic thinker and capableproblem-solver with excellent decision-making skills. Skilled in management,coordination, and communication, able to lead large matrix teamseffectively. Deep understanding of financialprocesses, including FP&A, IRR, NPV, and both OpEx andCapEx budgeting. Highly developed interpersonaland stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at alllevels. Experience inmanaging high-value, complex engineering and constructionprogrammes. Ability to meet challengingtargets and adapt to dynamic working environments. Strong motivational and conflictresolution skills; able to inspire teams to deliver highperformance.
