Our lawyers regularly advise on complex construction and development matters, where the convergence of operating infrastructure assets requires an understanding of law and regulation and practical project implementation. The practice represents public and private clients, contractors, design professionals and major subcontractors and suppliers in almost every area of contracting and disputes throughout the world, from planning and design to financing, through bidding and award, during construction and after project completion. With 120 lawyers at a global firm of more than 2,400 lawyers, our practice constitutes one of the largest concentrations of construction industry lawyers at any law firm. Disputes is at the forefront of the practice. The team has substantial trial experience with all types and phases of construction disputes. They understand firsthand the challenges posed by such matters and have ready access to top consulting and testifying experts as essential components of a winning arbitration team.The London office comprises 72 partners and 140 associates. It is the third largest office at Jones Day and the largest outside the United States. It is a full service office and, as well as Construction and Infrastructure, it covers areas including Antitrust, Business Restructuring, Corporate, Financial Markets, Global Disputes, Government Regulation, Intellectual Property, Labor & Employment, Real Estate and Tax. The construction practice in London is the largest of any office in headcount and comprises 5 partners and a team of associates. The group continues to have ambitious plans for growth and in light of this, the opportunities presented to it, and the strength of the adjacent practices in London, the group requires an additional mid-level associate.What we offer in this roleAs a Construction Disputes Associate at Jones Day London, you will be part of a high calibre, globally connected disputes team. You will have:an opportunity to work directly with and learn from industry-leading Partners;exposure to our large international and domestic clients;broad experience across high value construction and engineering disputes, both in the UK and internationally including arbitration, litigation and other forms of dispute resolution;the opportunity to contribute from early planning / advisory stages through to resolution and, where relevant, enforcement;direct Partner support and supervision due to our non-hierarchal approach;exceptional opportunities for internal development and progression; anda supportive environment, working with highly capable, driven and committed professionals.Key Responsibilitiesadvise clients (contractors, employers, developers, consultants, funders etc.) on contentious construction issues: defects, delays, variations, termination, defect liability, performance bonds, professional negligence;draft pleadings, statements of case, expert reports, submissions, opinions (both advisory and litigation/arbitration), witness statements;manage all phases of dispute work: discovery / document management, evidence, expert appointment, ADR (mediation, adjudication, dispute boards), hearings, enforcement;interpret and apply standard form construction contracts (e.g. JCT, NEC, FIDIC), bespoke contracts, as well as project agreements, procurement documentation etc.;work on cross border construction disputes, coordinating with overseas teams / counsel, applying principles of international arbitration;conduct legal research on applicable law, enforceable rights, procedural and substantive law in relevant jurisdictions;engage in client meetings, strategy sessions, and possibly negotiations / settlements;assist in business development: contributing to proposals and pitches, writing articles or thought leadership, maintaining and growing client relationships;mentor / supervise more junior associates, paralegals or trainees, where applicable.About youQualified and currently working at a law firm in England & WalesPQE: 4-6 years with a strong track record in construction disputes workMulti-jurisdictional experience, particularly in:infrastructure, energy & renewables, transport, public sector, major development projects;arbitration with overlapping jurisdictions or cross-border enforcement issues;litigation in the Technology & Construction Court (or equivalent jurisdictions);adjudication, dispute boards, ADR mechanisms;proven acquaintance with standard industry contracts: JCT, NEC, FIDIC and ability to interpret, draft or advise on these and familiarity with bespoke contracts;technical, analytical and drafting skills;work with expert technical evidence (engineering, quantity surveying etc.);project management and case management skills, ability to manage multiple matters, deadlines, budgets;commercial awareness, ability to appreciate cost/benefit, risk, and client sensitivities, pragmatic approach to strategy;team player: able to collaborate with partners, other offices; ability to work in cross office, cross jurisdictional contexts;excellent communication skills (written & oral), capable of interacting with clients, experts, counsel, etc.;leadership / mentoring capability (for more senior associate level) and potential for business development.What Jones Day OffersAbility to work on significant, high-profile construction disputes with a global footprintAccess to a broad set of colleagues and resources across multiple jurisdictionsExposure to both advisory and contentious workA meritocratic and collaborative environment; the chance for meaningful responsibilityCompetitive compensation and benefits for the London marketOpportunities for progression to senior associate / partner roles, with a strong track recordHow to ApplyIf you are serious about working as part of a truly global team on significant construction disputes matters, please apply via the Application Portal outlining your suitability for this position.
