London, United Kingdom Cardinal Hume Centre Full time

**TRUSTEE**

**CARDINAL HUME CENTRE, WESTMINSTER**

Voluntary/unpaid Closing date: Tuesday 11th October

**Value potential - help tackle youth and family homelessness.**

Based in Westminster for over 30 years, the Cardinal Hume Centre is at an exciting stage in our development. We need three new trustees to help.

We start with the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to live a full life. But we know that homelessness and poverty can wreck that potential. Too often homelessness at a young age is repeated and compounded in later life. Our renewed vision is to increase our focus on young people, children and their families. To value every individual, nurture their potential and help people thrive. Last year through the height of the lockdown we were able to help 1,100 people.

We are particularly looking for people who can bring experience through one or more of the following:
**WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR**:
It is of course essential that our trustees are enthusiastic about the Centre, its work and our values. We want to do everything we can to encourage people with different backgrounds or experiences to apply.

**Characteristics that help us on our Board**

It helps us if you feel you can be:

- ** Curious** - being a trustee is about stepping back, wondering why, and asking questions
- ** Thoughtful **- it is also about seeing different sides of an issue and judging whether and when to speak
- ** Generous** - everyone brings their own lifetime’s experiences; being a good trustee means offering those to other people
- ** Humble **- good trustees don’t behave as though they have the answers, and know they can be wrong sometimes
- ** Gentle** - they know that other people have feelings too, and also need a chance to think and to have their say
- ** Team-player** - being a trustee is about the whole team’s success
- ** Dependable** - the Centre needs trustees to turn up

It also helps us if you have a positive attitude to learning and can bring an ability to think strategically - or help people to think and prioritise over the longer term.

**Experience that will help strengthen our team**:
The Centre’s current Board is a strong team that includes a range of experience and skills. We are now recruiting to replace trustees who will soon leave the Centre and because we want the diversity and experience of our clients to be better reflected in our Board.

In this recruitment round we are particularly looking for someone who can Chair the Board’s Sub-Committee that focuses on our Fundraising and Communications. Some or all of the following experience will be helpful:

- **
Fundraising experience** **-** this could be through membership of a Development Board or Fundraising Committee as a volunteer leader, from being a funder of charitable work such as through being a member of a Grant giving body or Trust.
- ** Charity leadership** - working as a staff member or volunteer in a senior role in a charity, ideally one that funds its work in a similar or related sector through voluntary and individual giving.
- ** Communications experience - **this could be from working or volunteering in relevant sectors such as homelessness, poverty and welfare provision or from working in engaging stakeholder audiences.

We want to be a Centre that welcomes and includes. As part of this we would really like to hear from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We would particularly like to encourage people who are too regularly under-represented at Board level to apply.

If you join us, you will be part of a supportive and accessible Board that wants to make a real difference. If it is your first trustee role or if you have been one before, we will help your introduction to the Centre through support and training.

**If you believe each person matters, can bring enthusiasm and care, we would love to hear from you.**
