Environment Officer

We are looking for Environment Officers to join our Environment Management Waste Team regulating waste sites in the Thames Area. As an Environment Officer you’re at the forefront of protecting people and the environment from harm, contributing to a cleaner, greener world.
- You’ll be responsible for routinely inspecting waste recycling sites (landfill, non-hazardous, hazardous waste, bio-waste, metals), ensuring they operate without polluting the environment or harming people. You’ll work with customers to help them improve performance and operate legally within environmental regulations.
- We use various regulatory tools, sometimes we have to take tough action to achieve positive environmental outcomes, therefore you’ll need to investigate environmental offences. You may also occasionally be required to give evidence in a court of law.
- You’ll regularly be responding to a variety of pollution incidents. Incident roles involve remote management of incidents as well as fieldwork; collecting evidence and mitigating the effects of pollutants. This sometimes involves working with internal and external partners. You will contribute to the protection of air, water and land quality across a range of urban and rural locations.
- We provide full training and the offer of mentoring throughout your development. The job is extremely vital, varied and at times challenging.
The team
- Our team priorities include completing regulatory site visit, improving compliance at poor performing sites, reducing high risk fire sites, hazardous waste stream compliance and incident response.
- You will be based in one of our Waste teams which are located in either our office in Farnham, Surrey or in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. Work location may be flexible, with some homeworking permitted. All teams have responsibilities that involve working both outdoors and within the office completing necessary paperwork
Experience/skills required

- understand and record information correctly;
- enjoy working outdoors and in an office environment;
- willing to learn about environmental regulation, enforcement and participate in pollution incident response;

- Posts are full-time, other working patterns will be considered.
- The EO salary starts at £23,446, increasing incrementally through training stages to £28,785 once you’ve progressed through the EOA-B development programme. This process takes approximately 2 years.
- A full UK driving licence is essential as you’ll be required to participate in both in-hours and out-of-hours standby shifts and regular site inspections. A pool or hire vehicle will be made available to you for work purposes.
