Washroom Supervisor

**Job Purpose**
The MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) within the School of Infection and Immunity are seeking to appoint a Washroom Supervisor to oversee, and line manage on a daily basis, a small team of Washroom staff at the CVR. This role will sit within the Operations Team and will be responsible for delivering daily operations that provide a sterilisation, biological waste disposal and wash-up service for the CVR general and specialist research laboratories.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. Organise and monitor the delivery of effective and efficient day-to-day services within the Washroom which considers the needs of researchers and available resources.
2. Plan own and Washroom Assistants’ workload on a daily basis, preparing for specific tasks, prioritising requirements, and adopting a flexible approach to changing needs.
3. Regularly assess Washroom operations. Recommend and implement alternative processes and procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery.
4. Liaise with staff, contractors, and suppliers to identify and review service requirements, including costs for alternative suppliers of materials needed for the Washroom.
5. Review performance of Washroom staff, providing feedback where appropriate and develop training needs for staff as required.
6. Monitor daily the processing of glassware, plastic ware and other laboratory materials ensuring suitable and sufficient quantity and quality of materials are readily available for the research laboratories within the CVR.
7. Prepare and adapt Standard Operating Procedures.
8. Maintain documentary evidence of autoclave sterilisation and waste process to enable monitoring of efficient and safe practices.
9. Co-ordinate and plan Washroom preventative and reactive maintenance schedules including external engineer visits.
10. Responsible for ensuring safe permit to work is completed with engineers/contractors during service and maintenance of equipment.
11. Responsible for managing stock levels and ordering consumables using the University’s Agresso purchasing system.
12. Liaise with the Waste Contractor during uplift of waste and monitor the disposal of waste bags.
13. Responsible for the decontamination of laboratory coats prior to laundering and facilitate the laundry uplift and return of laboratory coats.
14. Responsible for ensuring Washroom staff provide support with the dispensing of liquid nitrogen into transport vessels and on an ad hoc basis provide support for filling liquid nitrogen tanks.
15. Manage support from Washroom staff to change gas cylinders for equipment and main supply located in the Sir Michael Stoker Building Level 3 service yard.
16. Strictly adhere to processes and procedures including compliance with national legislation. In addition, ensure the operation and maintenance of washroom equipment is in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and safety legislation.
17. Report any safety critical and operational issues immediately to Line Manager.
18. Support the Washroom team with daily duties during periods of reduced resources or increased workload.

**Essential**:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
or
Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 in English and Mathematics (Higher/Scottish Vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2 Knowledge of general laboratory housekeeping procedures, autoclaving, and waste disposal procedures.
A3 Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures, including the hazards associated with cleaning and disinfection with chemicals and an understanding of safe manual handling.
A4 Knowledge of waste inactivation procedures and autoclave validations.
