Arc Washroom Supervisor

**Job Purpose**

Supervision of the day to day running of the Advanced Research Centre (ARC) washroom which provides sterilisation, biological waste disposal and wash-up services to the ARC.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
- Accountable for the operations and logistics of the ARC washroom, which provides a sterilisation, biological waste disposal and wash-up service.
- Responsible for the day to day running of the unit, prioritising and organising the work schedule of the Unit.
- Accountable for the management and planning of activity in the washroom where staff are washing and sterilising glassware and plastics to the required standard, and ensure procedures are being followed regarding the autoclaving of biological waste. Assist with these tasks as required.
- Assess and plan work schedules for washroom staff, responding to changing priorities to ensure a quality and safe service is consistently delivered.
- Provide training and guidance to washroom staff to ensure safe operational standards and quality service are maintained and delivered.
- Provide training and advice to key building users on use of autoclaves and glasswashers to ensure safe operational standards are maintained.
- Co-ordinate the safe collection and return of glassware to laboratories. Assist with this as required. Use own judgement and liaise with key technical staff throughout the ARC to plan appropriate schedule for accessing labs to ensure safety of staff.
- Maintain a log of reports on the maintenance and repairs of equipment, diagnose issues as appropriate, and in conjunction with the Technical Operations Manager, organise repairs and liaise with external contractors for advice. Record daily deliveries, and also keep records of biological waste disposal, glassware washed and items sterilised for charging research groups on a monthly basis.
- Responsible for ensuring autoclaves and glass-washers are maintained to the standards necessary to comply with safety and regulatory standards, to ensure optimal operational efficiency. Responsible for ensuring statutory maintenance is completed.
- Ensuring supplies are maintained at appropriate levels to ensure an efficient operational service.
- Responsible for the management of the laundry service within the ARC ensuring the correct distribution of laboratory coats to and from laundry service provider and that paperwork is completed to aid the billing process to research groups.
- Deputise for the ARC Stores manager in their absence.
- Provide ongoing support to the ARC Stores Manager to ensure highest customer service standards are always maintained. Responsibilities include but are not limited to providing cover for annual leave, managing receipt of goods, supplying goods for stores orders placed, providing guidance and filtering queries from researchers, maintaining stock levels in the Store as required, and ensuring procedures for safe access to waste stores are adhered to.
- Fire warden responsibilities.

**Essential**

A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 (National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 Detailed knowledge of laboratory washroom procedures.

A3 Detailed knowledge of relevant health and safety procedures.

A4 Detailed knowledge of relevant COSHH regulations.

A5 Detailed knowledge of relevant equipment including autoclaves and glass-washers.

A6 Knowledge and understanding of relevant Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities & Diversity requirements.

B1 Health and Safety certification.

**Essential**

C1 Highly proficient in the use of autoclaves and glass washers including the general maintenance of such equipment, and ability to diagnose issues requiring an external contractor.

C2 IT skills.

C3 Basic laboratory skills.

C4 Detailed understanding of relevant policies and procedures in relation to the Washroom Facility ensuring standards and outputs are adhered to.

C5 Ability to communicate clearly, clarifying requirements and responsibilities from/to clients and colleagues.

C7 Initiative and judgement to resolve problems independently.

C8 Ability to supervise staff.

C9 Ability to plan or schedule work for days and weeks ahead, and to respond to changing pressures or requirements.
