Natural Burial Grounds Person

Our funeral services play an important role in local communities, extending beyond the immediate needs of arranging funeral services, and supporting the bereaved at a very emotional time in their life.
As a Burial Grounds Person you’ll assist in the provision of a courteous, efficient, effective, caring and professional dignified service to all clients, including all aspects of external operation of the Burial Ground.
**Key Responsibilities;**
- Accurately identify and excavate new and existing graves
- Prepare the chapel and associated areas for services and ensure they are carried out in accordance with the agreed arrangements including but not limited to: music, flowers, religious symbols, order of service etc.
- Attend services, provide direction and guidance to funeral directors, clergy/officiants and the bereaved before, during and after services
- Convey and manage funeral corteges to the grave side and supervise the burial throughout the committal
- Carry out maintenance and landscaping of the grounds including grass cutting, tree planting and associated duties
- Assist in the liaison with funeral directors, clergy/officiants, the bereaved and members of the public. Duties will also include supervision of vehicle parking and giving public tours of the cemetery as and when required
- Undertake basic maintenance of buildings, plant machinery and ancillary equipment
- Complete burials on weekends as and when required
- Participate on a rota basis to open and close the grounds and buildings out of hours as required
- Carry out the burial of human remains in accordance with statutory requirements, operating appropriate equipment in line with set guidelines
- Ensure the identification of, storage of and final disposal of cremated remains within the grounds are undertaken and documented appropriately
- Ensure the Book of Remembrance is turned daily as appropriate
- Undertake basic care, cleaning and maintenance of buildings, grounds and ancillary equipment
- Undertake general cleaning and preparation of all areas of the Burial Ground
- Be proactive in community activities to promote the Natural Burial Ground
**Key Experience, Knowledge and Skills;**
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the needs of the bereaved in a sympathetic, compassionate and understanding manner
- Good communication skills with a confident and professional manner
- Ability to operate machinery and equipment in accordance with set guidelines
- Physically able and aware of proper manual handling techniques
- Computer literate with basic administration and keyboard skills
- Ability to work as part of a team and without direct supervision or immediate support
- Ability to build/promote links within the local community
- Ideally you will be qualified in the safe use of plant machinery and burial process, however training will be provided
