The diabetes team within maternity at UHB are looking to recruit Maternity Support Workers who wish to be part of this team delivering high standards of care to women whose pregnancies require specialist management. The successful post-holder needs to be a team player who is keen to learn and is able to work well as part of a team. The diabetes service consists of dedicated Diabetic Specialist Midwives (DSM) working alongside the obstetric and diabetic medical teams. These MSW roles are to support the DSM with their workload, and in addition to usual MSW duties will be trained to have knowledge and awareness of NICE guidance in pregnancy.
Good communication skills are essential as elements of the job will involve teaching and giving information to women regarding diabetes monitoring in pregnancy. There will be a clerical component of the role to support documentation and recording of observations / capillary blood glucose levels. An ability to work with digital technology e.g. Diabetic Apps will be required.
A recent review of the diabetes service cross-site has been completed. This is a new role following this review and there is one post to be based at BHH / Solihull and one at GHH. However, the vision is that the diabetes service is delivered with equity across all sites and a good working relationship between the sites is required.

Working closely with the DSMs to achieve diabetes specific competencies to be effective in this role.
- Possess Band 2 MCA competencies including venepuncture, taking maternal observations etc.
- Undertake individual / group training sessions on how to perform Capillary Blood Glucose (CBG) monitoring
- Assist with data input and documentation as required
- Use knowledge of diabetes targets / NICE guidance for diabetes in pregnancy to assist DSM and diabetic team in giving evidence based, safe care.
- To work flexibly within the diabetes team to meet service needs including helping with clinics / telephone calls to women / carry out tasks appropriate to role under indirect supervision of DSMs
- Work within ANC and diabetes clinics as required to meet the needs of women under the care of the diabetes service
- Flexibility, excellent communication skills are essential requirements for this role
- Car-driver / access to car is preferable as some work / community visits may be appropriate in certain circumstances (as directed by DSMs)
