The post holder will be responsible for dealing with the surveillance, prevention and management of communicable and non-communicable hazards. You will provide specialist advice and support Health Boards across NHS Wales together with other consultants in the team. In discussion with the Director of Health Protection, the post holder will take the lead for a designated Health Board area specialist area of interest.
The post holder will engage with other local organisations and staff and agree with them how health protection should be delivered locally. You will investigate and manage a full range of health protection incidents and outbreaks (including non-infectious environmental hazards such as chemical incidents), and will carry out surveillance, co-ordination of support and the monitoring of implementation of key national programmes. You will undertake these responsibilities for the population of Wales and will normally act as Proper Officer for the 22 local authorities in Wales.
They will liaise with the Public Health Wales Environmental team on chronic non-communicable risks. In particular, s/he will work closely with others in Public Health Wales, the designated Health Board’s Executive Director of Public Health and the Public Health team, Local Authority Environmental Health departments, the NHS and the Local Resilience Forum. It is essential that effective working relationships are maintained and developed with a wide range of other agencies including local water companies, Natural Resources Wales, the Food Standards Agency, Animal and Plant Health Agency, occupational health services, hospital medical staff, health service managers, primary care organisations, schools, nursing homes and voluntary agencies.
The post holder will work closely with their agreed Health Board as a member of the Strategic Infection Prevention Group, the Immunisation Group and the Local Resilience Forum Co-ordination Group and will Chair appropriate and relevant groups. Regular Health Protection Reports are compiled and presented to these groups. S/he will also be involved with senior managers in the Health Board, as well as the hospital nursing management teams, emergency planners, the infection prevention and control team, and the Lead Infection Control Doctor / microbiologists in responding to incidents and outbreaks.
