HMRC is the UK’s Tax Authority, and the Customer Compliance Group (CCG) is key to this, helping people and businesses pay the right amount of tax. **Job description**:
As a compliance caseworker you’ll use your natural curiosity and investigatory skills to ensure that the right taxes have been paid. This will include analysing income and spending and working directly with a wide range of customers to understand their financial situations and how much tax they should be paying. Where necessary you’ll educate the customer and ensure that they understand what they need to do in the future to ensure that they pay the right amount of tax.

This role is varied and includes a mix of desk-based investigation as well as visiting taxpayers’ premises. This could include offices, warehouses, pubs, banks or anywhere a business operates from. You might need to stay away overnight in some cases.

**Working arrangements**

Our Compliance Caseworkers can work between 7am and 8pm from Monday to Saturday, up to 37 hours each week.

**Training**

We understand that the tax system can be complex, and we want to ensure our people can offer the best service to our customers. This is why, when you join us you’ll be trained for 18 months, learning everything you need for your role.

Once you’ve completed your training you could be asked to work in any of our tax specialisms and although there are differences, the core of each role includes:

- analysing financial transactions such as income and expenditure
- investigating information provided by our customers, and other people, to understand how much tax they should be paying
- understanding how tax legislation applies to financial transactions
- effectively working a number of compliance checks at any one time
- communicating directly with customers
- resolving disputes effectively and in a way that aligns with HMRC’s Customer Charter and Compliance Professional Standards

To become the world’s most trusted tax authority we must continue to have high standards. We strive to put our customers at the heart of what we do by treating them fairly, being responsive, getting things right and being aware of their situations.

You can find out more about what it’s like being a Compliance Caseworker on our Civil Service Careers website. We also have a video where Rachel talks about her role as a compliance caseworker.

There are 3 available sessions, which will take place on Friday 7 July from midday to 1pm, Friday 14 July from 1pm to 2pm and Wednesday 19 July from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Visit Compliance Caseworker virtual sessions to book your place.
