We currently have an exciting opportunity in the Wildlife Team as an Assistant Field Ecologist based at our Sand Hutton office with the opportunity to study for a T Level 4 Countryside Ranger Apprenticeship

**Job description**:
Working as part of the Wildlife Team as an assistant field ecologist, you will be studying for Level 4 Countryside Ranger whilst putting your ecological learning to direct use in the workplace.

Ecology is a wide discipline extending to all the relationships between plants, animals, people, and their environment, and the balances between these relationships.

This is an exciting time to be joining the Civil Service. With continuous support you will undertake surveys and monitor wildlife populations and their behaviour, liaise with landowners and other members of the public to arrange access permission for fieldwork.

Ensure biosecurity protocols that need to be implemented when conducting fieldwork. Be aware of the requirements of licensing procedures for work affecting protected species.

You will also assist with laboratory work and assist with studies on animal reproduction and behaviour carried out in captivity.

You will manage and maintain large data sets and appropriate methods of analysis and representation.

The Apprenticeship will take the form of 26 months undertaking the Level 4 Countryside Ranger. At the same time, you will be working in a team of field ecologists and other analysts in a government department, supported by your line manager.

Your learning will be a mixture of online and face-to-face teaching and assessments. The department you work in will make any necessary travel arrangements for you to attend in-person events with the University from your office location.

**Person specification**:
Have a keen and active interest in wildlife and the environment.

Have high standards of written and spoken English and can communicate effectively with all stakeholders including members of the public, landowners and colleagues.

Have knowledge of basic Health and Safety and an understanding of safe working in the field and with animals.

Are able to work alone or as part of a team, to take responsibility and remain positive and focused in the face of challenge.

Have experience with excellent data handling and record keeping and maintaining quality.

- Experience of working with Wildlife or other animals
- Experience of dealing with members of the public

- Experience of using MS packages including Word and Excel
- Experience of working outdoors in different environments
