Apprentice Scaffolder

We are looking for someone with great teamwork, communication and practical skills, excellent attention to detail, and who is reliable, and able to work safely and responsibly. You will also need to be eager to learn at work and college, and ideally have an interest in the building industry. No experience is necessary, and so an apprenticeship is perfect for those coming out of school or college.
The apprenticeship
The apprenticeship covers, but is not limited to the following
- Health and safety including relevant standards and guidance in relation to erection and dismantling scaffolds
- Types, uses and methods of inspection and the purpose of various materials
- Methods of handling, stacking and servicing materials
- Types, uses and purpose of prefabricated beans and the rules for their assembly
- The purpose, types, uses and loading of protection fans
- The methods of founding scaffolds on differing types of surface
- Attaching and spacing transoms to support working platforms and strengthen the scaffold structure
- The correct methods of attaching spurs, rakers, check fitting, droppers and puncheons to scaffolds
- The safe and correct method of erecting and dismantling Aluminium towers
- The correct and safe methods of erecting independent and putlog scaffolds with returns, towers and birdcages at three lifts high in tube fittings
- How to calculate the number of ties, the spacing and test requirements to restrain sheeted and un-sheeted scaffolds
- The regulations governing the inspection of basic scaffolds
- Statutory requirements for access including ladders, ladder towers and stairways
- How to interpret design layout drawings and determine the correct and safe method of erecting and dismantling the scaffolds
- How to organise materials to lead a gang of scaffolders carrying out scaffolding operations
The employer
Our apprentices work on placements with a contractor in their local area whilst employed throughout by Shared Apprenticeships.
Our apprentices have the support of a Mentor and access to our Early Careers Manager who is committed to seeing each one through to completion and onward progression to full-time employment in the industry and/or a higher apprenticeship. We provide PPE, a CSCS card where necessary, and appropriate health and safety training. We also pay for study days as well as work days, contribute towards travel expenses, and cover the cost of an NUS Apprentice Extra discount card.
