To provide expert assistance to the Consultant and Middle Grade Medical Staff in the provision of a highly quality, patient centred service. The post holders are expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge. They are also expected to act under their own initiative based on their training and current national and local guidelines.
The Physician Associate role is being developed to work alongside the medical team. They will assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommended treatment. They will liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients. A designated Consultant or Registrar will supervise them and will also have individual mentors to oversee their career development. It is envisaged that the role will be developed flexibly over time following the appointee’s clinical interests and in line with the needs of the service. This post may be allocated to a speciality or rotate between Emergency and Acute Medicine with in the trust’s Responsive Care Group.

The post holder will provide care for the presenting patient from initial history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of care. They will demonstrate safe, clinical decision making and expert care, including assessment and diagnostic skills, for patients within allocated ward areas.
To provide strong leadership skills and to act as a senior professional role model at all times, sharing skills and knowledge.
To integrate into clinical teams, communicating effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
To provide Clinical Leadership and specialist advice relating to medical problems to patients, relatives and carers.
Be pro-active in leading, developing and undertaking innovative practice within the department.
To monitor clinical outcomes and patient experience.
The role will also provide a teaching and education service to students, medical and nursing staff when required.
It is envisaged that the roles will be developed flexibly over time in accordance with the appointee’s clinical interests and in line with the needs of the service.

Promote and lead services in the treatment of patients within Emergency and In Hospital Care areas

To assist in clinical audit and the setting and monitoring of standards of care.
Promote health education and provide appropriate information and advice to patients and their carers.
