**Business, trade and economic statistics are more important than ever. Do you want to shape the way that they are produced and used to maximise their public value?**
The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) is the UK’s independent regulator of statistics. Our role is to enhance public confidence in statistics.
We are a small, enthusiastic regulatory team at the heart of the government statistical system, with a single aim to ensure that statistics serve the public good - ensuring they are produced in a trustworthy way, are of high quality, and provide value by answering people’s questions, providing accountability, helping people make choices and informing policy. Our team of regulators in our topic domains - such as Business Trade and International Development; Economy; and the Labour Market and Welfare domain work together to embrace this challenge.
You will lead regulatory projects ranging from responding to emerging areas of concern about the production and use of business and economic statistics through to long-term reviews such as of UK Trade statistics published by ONS. Recent examples include international comparisons of the impact of coronavirus pandemic on GDP and statistics on the levels of financial sanctions on Russia. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to OSR’s wider strategic projects, and to regulatory work in our other topic domains.
Your analysis, horizon scanning and stakeholder engagement will be key to identifying those priority areas where regulatory work can add value. The work will involve planning stakeholder engagement, being an ambassador for our work engaging with key stakeholders such as ONS, the Department for International Trade, HM Treasury and the Bank of England. A key question for our Business and Economy domains is how regulation of business and economic statistics should change following the UK’s departure from the EU.
The role presents a great opportunity to work closely with people at the centre of the government statistical system on high-profile projects. You will use and quickly enhance knowledge about a range of public policy topics covering economics and other areas, synthesise information from different sources, analyse complex and incomplete facts and figures, present findings to senior government and external bodies and represent the Authority at meetings and events.
