Undergraduate Programme Lead

To lead the development and implementation of the School of Medicine MBChB
To be responsible for the operational management of the Undergraduate
Programme Curriculum in Medicine, including all aspects of the GMCs ‘Promoting
Excellence’ and overseeing effective implementation.
Supporting the Head of School of Medicine in the continuous development of school
specific strategies and plans.
To oversee clinical placements, supporting the GP Educational Lead and the
clinical placements team.
To support the Deputy UPLs with their portfolios
To deputise for the Head of School when required.

**Role Specific**
**Overall Leadership and Student Achievement**
- Is responsible for the overall leadership of the MBChB programme across
all 5 years.
- Leads developments to ensure innovation and good practice in learning,
teaching, and assessment and are embedded across the programme
- Provides leadership to ensure the continuous improvement of student
performance on the programme, including relevant outcomes and
achievements.
**Academic Development of the Programme**
- Performs a professional academic leadership role in ensuring the currency
and relevance of the curriculum
- Leads the developments to ensure innovation and good practice in
learning, teaching, and assessment are embedded across the programme.
- Ensure the provision of opportunities which allow for the development of
employability and other graduate attributes, both within and around the
curriculum.
**Approval and Subject Review**
- Contributes to, and leads on where appropriate, the processes of and
**Boards/ Committees/Panels/Groups**
- Chair the Programme Studies Board (twice yearly) and LEP Liaison
Meetings (monthly)Committees to provide academic leadership and
promote innovation and good practice.
- Attends the Assessment Committee and Quality Committee (every 2
months).
- Attends, or where required, chairs, the Programme/Module Assessment
Boards (3 per year).
- Attends the Progress Panels (variable) to provide academic leadership and
advice for student progress set against the GMC standards of ‘Promoting
Excellence’.
- Attend other committees identified in the within the governance structure
including (but not limited to):
o School of Medicine Management Committee (monthly)
- Joint Curriculum Implementation Board (monthly)
- Admissions Committee (every 2 months)
- Staff Student Liaison Committee (twice yearly)
- Professional Development and Welfare Committee (every 3
months)
- Health and Conduct Panel (variable)***
**Foster Student Engagement on the Programme**
- Facilitates the induction of student representatives and encourage their
engagement with the SSLC
- Attends programme SSLC
- Establishes and maintains a strong relationship with student
representatives in order to gather and respond to student feedback both
within and out with the formal committees of the University
- Collects feedback from the wider study body and responds in/formally as
appropriate.
**Annual Review**
- Monitors and actively enhances the quality of the programme ensuring that
it is evaluated in accordance with agreed quality assurance and
enhancement procedures
**External Examiners**
- Work closely with the school’s Assessment Lead and liaises with external
examiners and responds to feedback from them on the programme.
**Recruitment and Admissions**
- Actively engages in recruitment and conversation activities including that
materials and publications are accurate and up to date.
- Works with the Academic Lead for admissions, ensures that Summer
Schools and Multi-Mini Interviews are well-managed.
- Engages in the activities that ensure selecting for excellence and widening
participation.
**Academic and Pastoral Support**
- Organises appropriate induction for new and returning students
- Ensures timely provision of relevant documentation including up-to-date
programme and module handbooks through the VLE (Canvass)
- Allocates students to personal tutors where appropriate
- Acts as a key point of contact in the provision of academic advice including
counselling students with regard to Selected Student Component choices,
elective study abroad, academic regulations, extenuating circumstances,
leaves of absence, transfer, withdrawal, conduct and fitness to practice.
- Directs students as required to the various sources of non-academic advice
available across the University
**Clinical Placements**
- Ensures that academic and pastoral support is in place on clinical
placements
- Ensures that Local Education Providers (LEPs) are compliant with GMC QA
standards.
- Chair the LEP Liaison Board committee(s) and attend the QA LEP visiting
team.
- Ensure comparability of experience for student regardless of LEP location
**General Medical Council (GMC)**
- Liaise with the GMC to ensure compliance with all the requirements
necessary to achieve and maintain accredited status and to advise the
