Chester, United Kingdom RECORD Biodiversity Information System Full time

About RECORD

RECORD is the local environmental record centre serving Cheshire, Halton, Warrington and
Wirral. Set up in 2000, RECORD was the pilot local record centre in England, and is a not for
profit organisation and registered charity.

**RECORD’s mission statement is**:
RECORD will work to further the appreciation, understanding and protection of the Cheshire
region’s wildlife habitats, plants and animals, by collating, managing, archiving and analysing
their aggregated data holdings, and by interpreting, presenting, and providing access to them,
commensurate with restrictions agreed with data suppliers and with the protection of the
species and habitats involved.

Main purpose of the post

The Ancient Woodland Inventory in England identifies woodlands that have been in existence for
centuries on undisturbed soils. They cover only 2.6% of England, making up less than a third of
our total woodland resource. Ancient woodlands are important for their rich wildlife and

**cultural heritage. They create a link with the past**: ecological touchstones in a changing
landscape. Once lost they cannot be recreated.

The existing Inventory is an essential tool for planners and developers, policy makers, land
owners, foresters, conservationists, landscape historians, and many others. Originally
developed in the 1980’s, the Ancient Woodland Inventory is now in need of updating to take
advantage of advances in desktop mapping.

RECORD has already completed the initial phase of the project and we are seeking a second
Officer to work alongside our existing Officer to complete desk-based analysis, comparing
historical data with current information to determine the status of those sites highlighted in
the initial phase. There will also be a subset of sites selected for field-based survey. The
role will involve organising and carrying out field surveys and liaising with land managers and
other project partners.

About youThe role is ideally suited to someone with existing GIS skills and an understanding of habitat mapping. As there may be fieldwork involved in the role, an understanding of woodland ecology would be beneficial.
