Network Maintenance Operative
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
How’s this for job satisfaction: at Scottish Water we look after Scotland's most precious natural resource. From source to tap, we are guarding Scotland’s reputation for refreshingly pure water, and caring for our environment at the same time.
What you’ll do
Your number-one priority is resolving customer drainage issues. You’ll take control of any situation, investigate problems that come up in sewer network with solutions that make customers happy - always making sure they’re kept up to date.
You will be responsible for carrying out single person choke clearing activities and a variety of other tasks. Dealing with customer facing related issues on a day to day basis. The focus of the role will to be ensure the resolution of customer issues and the recovery of any reputational impact our operations have on customers.
This role is primarily field based operating a choke vehicle, this contains an element of lone working. Full training and protection will be provided to enable you to carry out the role.
As an Operative, you will be responsible for the execution of site work ensuring maintenance, repair, and installation of networks is carried out in a safe and efficient manner. You will make sure that all work complies with the relevant H&S safety process and work practices to eliminate or minimise risks to health, safety and welfare of themselves, other employees and general public who come in contact with their site works (Chapter 8 NSRWA will be your guide).
In addition you will carry out site specific risk assessments, carry out relevant vehicle and plant checks before use and ensure the most efficient and effective use of resources including labour, plant and material.
Accurate reports are essential, so you’ll be across reporting systems for measuring performance and productivity. And as you’ll be working as part of a team, you’ll do your turn on the standby rota for out-of-hours work.
What you’ll bring
You’ll spend a fair amount of time working alone, so you’ll need to be self-motivated, but still eager to contribute to your team’s goals. Basic IT skills are a must, as you’ll be using digital equipment and apps throughout the day. You’ll need report writing skills too - nothing fancy, but enough to get your point across clearly, quickly, and accurately.
A full, clean driving licence is non-negotiable, as you’ll need to travel around sites in the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire areas.
It would be ideal if you have HGV licence. And experience using HPWJ equipment.
Holding a CPCS or NSRWA qualification would be great, but it’s not a must-have.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This role will involve shift working. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year. And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash - handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
In November 2024, we are moving to a 35-hour week to support the wellbeing and work/life balance of our employees.
This role will be a Grade 4. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £27,590. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £32,410.
Plus shift allowance.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
A few final things worth knowing
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first thr
