London, United Kingdom NHS England and NHS Improvement Full time

NHS England and NHS Improvement lead the National Health Service in England. We oversee foundation trusts, NHS trusts and independent providers, offering support to give patients consistently safe, high quality, compassionate care within local health systems that are financially sustainable. From 1 April, NHS England and NHS Improvement came together to act as a single organisation so collectively we can add greater value to the NHS.

As Head of Patient Safety Strategy Delivery the post holder will work as part of the NHS National Patient Safety Policy and Strategy team. The Patient Safety Policy and Strategy team is responsible for the development and implementation of coherent strategy, policies and programmes of work for the wider NHS National Patient Safety team. They support the NHS National Director of Patient Safety in setting the strategic direction and work programme of the team and for patient safety across the NHS.

In particular, the post holder will be responsible for work to coordinate implementation of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy published in July 2019. They will work to develop cross-organisational understanding and delivery of the strategy and coordinate activity across the relevant national arms-length bodies including regulators, commissioners, educators, performance and improvement bodies to optimise the use of resources in delivering the Strategy. A key objective is to avoid duplication and ensure that all frontline healthcare providers are able to receive consistent and aligned messaging from the national NHS bodies in relation to patient safety issues.

The post holder will support the Head of Patient Safety Policy and Partnerships to work with patients and the public to improve their involvement in patient safety policy work.

**Key responsibilities for the post holder include**:

- Supporting the delivery of a consistent patient safety strategy particularly across the national NHS arm’s length bodies, working with highly complex data, facts and situations requiring analysis, interpretations and comparisons on a range of options and making decisions on the most appropriate approach.
- Developing and maintaining relevant governance processes and protocols to support the delivery of the strategy.
- Aligning the development of individual delivery plans by working with appropriate Managers/Directors.
- Focusing on tracking progress and ensuring that the intended benefits are achieved with outcomes maximised.
- Managing and monitoring the performance management process for delivery including appropriate programme controls ensuring performance targets are on track.
- Ensuring appropriate stakeholder engagement strategy is in place
- Supporting work to improve the involvement of patients and the public in patient safety improvement

The post holder will also help to develop and deliver NHS patient safety policy more widely through supporting the work of the Patient Safety team and may be asked to support other patient safety strategy related work as necessary.
