**Job description**:
The RAIB investigates accidents on the railway and tramway networks in the United Kingdom. Within the RAIB, there are inspectors who undertake investigations, and a support services team who are responsible for all non-investigative aspects of the Branch’s activity. This job is part of the support services team.
There are five functions performed by the support services team: general operational support, health, safety and facilities, publications, finance/procurement and information technology. At the level of administrative officer, you can expect, in time, to be involved in all five functions. This means that your work content will be extremely varied; you may find yourself transcribing a witness interview, helping to keep equipment in good condition, proof-reading a document before publication, undertaking procurement activities or dealing with basic Information Technology (IT) problems. And possibly all of those on the same day
We are an organisation that needs to react quickly to unexpected events and rapidly changing priorities, which can sometimes cause peaks in workload and the need to meet short deadlines.
Training and development will be provided for the successful applicant as we would not expect you already to be an expert in all these areas. What we need from you is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. In return for your commitment, we will provide you with the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
**General Operational Support**:
This core part of the role includes transcribing witness interviews, managing investigation records and evidence, collecting items like CCTV footage, and booking travel and accommodation. You'll need to work quickly and accurately, know when to seek guidance, and collaborate effectively with your team. Over time, you may also assist at accident sites with evidence management and logging actions for the Lead Investigator.
**Health, Safety & Facilities**:
You’ll help manage reception and visitors at our Derby office, maintain and prepare specialist response vehicles and equipment, and support health and safety documentation and training.
**Publications**:
You’ll support the production of RAIB’s published materials by proofreading documents to ensure clarity and accessibility. With training, you may also assist in creating or editing documents for publication. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and meeting deadlines are key.
**Finance/Procurement**:
You'll help keep the office running by monitoring and ordering supplies, and you’ll be trained to use our procurement system to manage orders from start to finish.
**Information Technology**:
As a first point of contact for basic IT issues, you’ll help colleagues troubleshoot problems or arrange external support. While not an IT specialist, you'll be part of a team that supports day-to-day tech needs.
