**Job description**:
- Within the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the UK Maritime Services (UKMS) Directorate has responsibility for developing, negotiating, and maintaining UK policies and regulations relating to a wide range of safety and environment issues associated with ships and vessels of all sizes.
- We have an interesting opportunity for a proactive individual to join us as the Assistant Director Ship Standards leading the development of policy, regulation and guidance in respect of ship safety and environmental performance.- Successful collaboration is crucial within this position and the role holder will manage the interaction with colleagues across MCA - especially with Assistant Directors within the Survey and Inspection function, other Government Departments such as the Department for Transport and industry stakeholders such as the Chamber of Shipping and Fishing Federations.
- This role also brings much interaction with Ministers through the management of the flow of policy and regulation submission for sign off and dealing with ministerial correspondence.
- The Assistant Director Ship Standards will enjoy a varied role which spans many interesting and key policy areas ranging across high profile areas such as safety at sea and the decarbonisation and climate change agenda. The role provides a fantastic opportunity to really shape the future direction of regulation within the shipping industry to ensure fit for purpose policy, regulation and guidance.
- This role will be based in the Southampton HQ. MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work. Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.
- There will be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK and overseas, which may involve overnight stays away from home. A passport valid for international travel is required.**Responsibilities**:
- Responsibilities include but are not limited to:_
- Leading the Ship Standards team to ensure the delivery of effective regulations and standards, building regulatory best practice within the team
- Contributing to the delivery of a regulatory climate that is clear, consistent and supportive of the UK maritime industries and ensures that the UK has safety standards and regulations which safeguard ships, seafarers and the public
- Supporting the Deputy Director Regulations & Standards and Director of UKMS in respect of strategic leadership of the MCA internal business plan and other relevant Directorate work plans
- Working in collaboration with other Assistant Directors in UKMS to explore and develop opportunities within UKMS that will enable UKMS to be at the forefront of creating, improving and implementing new and existing domestic and international Standards on safety, sustainability and innovation
