The Ship Standards department has responsibility for developing and maintaining UK policies and regulations relating to a wide range of safety and environment issues associated with ships and vessels of all sizes (from small pleasure vessels to the largest internationally trading ships). Working both domestically and internationally we are at the forefront of maritime policy making and delivery. This is achieved through the work of nine teams. Click here to find out more.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to drive policy development and make a real contribution in the shipping industry in ensuring safer lives, cleaner ships and cleaner seas. This role provides a dynamic working environment, with regular engagement with operational colleagues in other areas of the MCA, with other government departments and national maritime administrations and with industry stakeholders.
This role will be based in our Headquarters in Southampton. There will be a business requirement for the post holder to be based in the office for a set number of days per week. Details of this arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.
The role will require occasional UK and overseas travel which may involve overnight stays and working outside of normal hours, potentially at weekends. A passport valid for international travel is required.
**Responsibilities**:
- The role responsibilities include but are not limited to:_
- With the support of Senior Colleagues, leading on specific Policy projects
- Working with colleagues in Ship Standards to represent the MCA at meetings, working groups, project groups and external events as required in support of key responsibilities and the work of Ship Standards
- Contributing to the work of Ship Standards and maintaining a positive and proactive role in liaison across the MCA, shipping industry, classification societies, seafarers and passenger organisations, Department for Transport and other government organisations which have an interest in shipping matters
- Supported by Senior Colleagues, leading on the drafting of instructions for government lawyers to facilitate the timely implementation of regulations, draft codes and guidance to implement UK maritime policy and to coordinate the development of associated impact assessments in conjunction with Government economists
- Actively managing and responding in a timely and responsible manner to the contents of shared in-boxes and provide a level of customer service experience that both meets and manages customer expectations

**About You**
We are looking for someone who has exceptional communication skills and can express themselves in a confident and concise way. You will represent the Agency in a professional and clear manner, ensuring key messages are delivered to both internal and external stakeholders in a timely manner.
You will be someone who naturally enjoys working collaboratively with different business areas and likes the challenge of influencing others to achieve business outcomes. You will have excellent stakeholder engagement skills and can build rapport quickly with both internal and external stakeholders which enables you to build solid working relationships.
It is essential that you have a high standard of drafting aptitude which allows you to draft quality submissions and other policy documents, with the ability to work independently and to tight deadlines.
You will also need to have knowledge of using Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook, as well as good analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to confidently make recommendations.
