**Investigating genes that cause primordial dwarfism: Insights into genome integrity and DNA replication**
A research assistant is sought for a post in the laboratory of Professor Andrew Jackson. The successful applicant will work on projects investigating disease mechanisms of extreme growth disorders associated with genome instability and DNA replication.
**The Opportunity**:
As a lab, we identify genes and investigate the biological processes that cause primordial dwarfism, a condition of extreme growth failure of the both brain and body. Such individuals are the 'smallest people in the world'. These disorders are due to fewer cells being made during development, leading to a smaller person. Identifying primordial dwarfism genes helps diagnose and manage these rare conditions and it also gives insights into how the body regulates growth, shedding light into why humans are bigger than mice and how our brains evolved.
The Jackson lab is a diverse, international and multidisciplinary group that combines genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology and model organisms to gain new insights into human disease and cell physiology. We have identified and characterised over 25 primordial dwarfism genes encoding fundamental components of DNA replication machinery, cell division and DNA repair signalling (eg. Nature Genetics 38:910; 38:917; 40:232; 43:23; 43:350, 43:356).
