**Summary**

APHA is an executive agency of Defra and works to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.
The Software Development Team in the Department of Epidemiological sciences builds and maintains bespoke IT, data management, and software tools spanning multiple high impact areas including disease operations control databases, simulation models to informdisease control policy, and specialist scientific computing infrastructure for scientists across Defra group

**Job description**

The Applications Development Manager will lead on requirements and delivery for a range of technical projects by negotiating scope, planning and monitoring delivery, quality assuring outputs, and prioritising resource allocation.
This is a specialised senior role requiring both IT project and line management skills, together with technical understanding of IT system development in a scientific environment.
The outputs from this work will support important capabilities concerning animal disease control in the UK.

**Responsibilities**

The main areas of responsibility are and not limited to:

- Leading interactions with stakeholders to transform business objectives into deliverable IT, data, and software projects, typically as part of larger multidisciplinary initiatives.
- Planning, managing, and tracking progress across a portfolio of projects, providing transparency and assurance.
- Maximising the efficiency of technical staff, for example by acting as a customer proxy, driving knowledge transfer, and matching skills to tasks.
- Helping prioritise the allocation of limited technical resource, including balancing time between legacy and new systems development.
- Line managing technical staff and promoting a supportive and collaborative team culture.
Out of hours work may be required in the event of an outbreak emergency.

**Qualifications**

If qualifications were not obtained in English then we will require documentary evidence of a GCSE pass at grade A - C or an equivalent qualification in English.
